Gun culture derailed for the moment (Arkansas)
http://arkansasnews.com/2011/02/15/gun-culture-derailed-for-the-moment/

<snip>

What no one keen to Arkansas politics had ever expected was that a bill backed by the National Rifle Association to extend our cultural gun addiction would meet this “do-not-pass” fate, especially by the initiative of freshmen conservative Republican legislators.
<snip>

Rep. Denny Altes of Fort Smith handled this measure to provide that we could all carry guns openly without having to undergo the training and permitting required of those now allowed to carry their weapons in a concealed fashion.

<more>

Why would we presume to regulate one’s ability to carry a gun hidden in one’s pocket but not one’s ability to strap on a holstered gun and walk down the street?

What about a prisoner on parole that had been granted with the usual restriction that the parolee not be in the presence of open firearms and who returned to his home to encounter a family member was, quite legally, traipsing around with his gun held openly?

<more>

:rofl:

1. Open carry is legal in Washington.
And many other states. Not a problem.

2. Any public policy which encourages proliferation of guns and ammo is a definite problem.
Your tunnel vision notwithstanding.

3. It's a problem to you but not to me...
I carry concealed and live in Florida where many people have firearms and can carry a loaded firearm in their car without a license as long as it is "securely encased" which means in a glove box.

If the proliferation of guns and ammo in Florida were a serious problem, snowbirds (aka tourists) would not visit our state.

5. Some of us do not visit Florida because of its stupid guns laws.
Unfortunately, the stupidity has spread nationwide.

Fortunately for the moment, at least one small part of it has been squashed, at least temporarily, in Arkansas.

24. Now.. after all that wharrgarble..
What percentage of those crimes you mentioned were perpetrated by those holding a valid Texas CHL?

If there are none, then you've chucked yourself into a ravine of irrelevance w/r/t this sub-thread.

But hey, I figured I'd let you flail around at the bottom before mentioning that.

26. You seem to think CHL status is an issue separate and apart from guns in the hands of the public.
That is what they call picking the fly shit out of pepper.

11. I'm sure many people travel to Florida rather than California ...
because of our gun laws.

Especially those tourists who have concealed weapons permits which Florida honors under its reciprocity program.

they honor my CPL from Michigan. And I would like to add that I've been pleasantly surprised how little hassle it is to transport my handgun in my checked luggage on an airplane.
