Chicago: Southside Woman Shoots, Kills Burglar With Handgun.

A woman today shot and killed a man who Chicago police said was breaking into her South Chicago neighborhood home on the city's Southeast Side.

Police said the victim heard glass breaking in her basement on the 8200 block of South Kingston Avenue at about 10 a.m.

After grabbing her handgun, the woman confronted two intruders, but struck only one when she opened fire, police spokeswoman Officer Anne Dwyer said. The second man fled.

Police said that the wounded man was holding a tire iron when he was shot and that the victim wouldn’t face any criminal charges. A representative with the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, which files felony charges, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Story continues at link.

This presents an interesting dilemma for the DA's office. Given Chicago's handgun laws it is almost certain that she had to gun illegally. But prosecuting a woman for defending herself against a burglar will be politically unpopular with the voters.

6. How dare she? Doesn't she know that having a gun increased her
risk for violence? That's probably why the burglary happened in the first place. She should be ashamed of herself.

A good American would sit quietly and not try to bother the nice men as they took what they needed.

7. Woman Shot With Own Gun

A manhunt is under way for a man who broke into a 21-year-old woman's apartment and shot her in the stomach with her own gun in Imperial Beach Thursday, deputies said.

Deputies received a call from a woman who said she had been shot at her apartment on the 200 block of Elder Ave. When deputies arrived, they found the woman with a gunshot wound.

9. If you own a firearm for self defense ...
you have to be willing to use it to stop an attack even if it means that you might severely injure or kill the attacker, AND you must also have the knowledge on how to use it.

Many people hesitate when they draw a weapon and the attacker continues his attack. Shooting another person is not natural and goes against what most of us were taught as we grew up. Even if you are willing to shoot another person, forgetting to drop the safety on a pistol or showing a lack of confidence in how you handle you weapon can lead to it being taken from you.

18. I was watching "Sons of Guns" Sunday night...
...it's about a gun shop in Louisiana that does custom gun work... silenced shotguns and such.

Anyway, a customer comes in looking to buy a handgun. Her house had been burgled a couple of days ago and she wanted a gun in case it happened again with her or her family at home.

Now, this woman was ready to buy. And she had never fired a handgun in her life. The owner could have easily sold her a thousand dollars or more worth of firearms and accessories and simply left her to her own devices.

But he didn't. Instead, he wrote down on a piece of paper the name and address of a person who teaches gun-safety and familiarization classes as well as armed self-defense and gave it to her. He told her to come back when she knew what kind of gun she wanted and knew how to use it.

She left without spending a single dime.

That is the reality of facing that kind of situation. Not everybody can face that reality.

15. From your post link
The victim said she was in a back room of her apartment when she heard a noise in the living room, deputies said. She armed herself with a handgun and went into the living room to investigate the noise. She told deputies she saw the man tampering with her home entertainment equipment. The victim and suspect struggled over the handgun and the woman was shot in the stomach.

17. Good for her - better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6
in areas like Chicago who want to deprive the innocent of the best means of self-defense.
