Pa. House approves bill expanding 'Castle Doctrine' self-defense law

By Myles Snyder - emailHARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - The state House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday to expand the rights of residents when protecting themselves and their families.

House Bill 40 would broaden the so-called "Castle Doctrine" to allow citizens to use force, including deadly force, against an attacker outside of their homes, in their automobiles or place of business, or any other place they have a right to be - except in certain circumstances.

The measure would also provide protection against criminal prosecution or civil litigation for those who act to defend themselves.

1. Good. It's a very liberal, non-authoritarian law. n/t

3. The D.A.s are pissed about it. Any fuckwad on a shooting charge can use it as a defense.
I own guns. I'd use them if necessary. That's not the issue. HB40 is written so broadly that pretty much anyone anywhere can shoot to kill and claim "self-defense". That's just wrong.

4. People should have a broad right to self-defense. Your criticism of the law isn't a new one.
It always comes down to a standard of reasonableness of the person's frame of mind, and of actions.

9. Too bad they're pissed....District Attorneys
Need to be reminded that they do not make laws, they enforce them as passed by Legislators. And D.A.s often need to get smacked down on a regular basis by Legislators. Texas State Legislators had to do it here in Texas when some D.A.s tried to pervert the spirit of the law when it came to concealed carry.

12. Nothing in the bill mentions that
Therefore it doesn't affect the right to sue.
