Do restaurant owners have more clout than law-enforcement officers with Ohio lawmakers

The Ohio Senate easily passed legislation yesterday to allow people with concealed-carry permits to take their guns into bars, restaurants, arenas, museums and other areas where alcohol is served - as long as they don't drink.

Senate Bill 17 was approved by a vote of 25-7. But the legislation might hit a wall in the House.

Although House Speaker William G. Batchelder, R-(edit-moran) Medina, said he thinks "it's not a bad idea," the bill does not appear to have the votes for passage in his chamber.

13. I don't think gun carriers should put restaurants in that position. If you can't walk into a

restaurant without a gun, I'd suggest going somewhere else, or just sucking it up and watching over your shoulder if you are that concerned.

14. What you fail to realize ...

is that you usually park your car and walk to and from the restaurant.

Parking lots are so common we may rarely think of them as “dangerous places”. But statistically, they are the second most common places for personal assault and theft.

And if you can't carry inside the restaurant, you would have to leave your firearm behind in your car, where some thief might steal it.

The Ohio Senate voted 25-5 Wednesday to allow a gun owners with concealed carrying permits to take their weapons into bars and other places that serve alcohol.

SB 17 now moves to the Republican-controllled House, where a similar bill stalled in the last legislative session when Democrats held the House majority.

Law enforcment groups opposed the legislation, which prohibits firearms owners from drinking alcohol while carrying. Critics have questioned whether the legal restriction is enough of a deterrent of gun violence inside bars.

Sen. Bill Seitz (R-edit - moranCincinnati) called the bill a "natural evolution" of Ohio's concealed carry laws.

6. Restauraunts can still choose to ban guns on premises & the current ban on "bar carry" is redundant

Two things will give this bill limited impact, even if passed.

a) I don't see the why restaurants should object to a statewide restriction of rights when any individual establishment can prohibit guns on their own premises. There's no point in restaurants opposing a bill that won't impact their restaurant one bit - should they choose to. All they have to do is prohibit guns on their property.

b) Drinking or being intoxicated and carrying guns is ALREADY illegal. The ban on guns in places that serve alcohol is redundant and unnecessary. The current ban basically provides no benefit that isn't already provided by other laws. Therefore, for the sake of legislative efficiency, it should be removed.

17. Here's a solution to "no-guns" signs ...

If I see a "no-guns" sign on the door of an commercial establishment, I take my business elsewhere. Usually, I call the store or restaurant and politely tell them that the sign cost them my business. Many other people who carry concealed in Florida do the same. Consequently you rarely see a "no-guns" sign on the door of a store in Florida.

But to be fair, Florida has had "shall issue" concealed carry since 1987. Store owners no longer suffer from irrational panic at the concept that an honest citizen who has passed a background check and has had training might carry a concealed weapon into his store.

But for people that live in states where concealed carry is as readily accepted a "No Guns, No Money" card quickly gets the point across.

21. Same thing in PA

The last time I saw a no weapons sign was when the first IHOP opened in Robinson(near Pittsburgh). Funny thing is in Morgantown, WV they didn't post. The sign was gone next time I went there.

Reading PA gunowners forum there are still some merchants that freak at open carry though. As much as they discuss there I've only seen 1 open carrier except for a couple of guys at my local gun club.
