Democrat Portantino's "open carry" ban sails through committee, pro-gun groups plan protest (Calif.)
http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/news/ci_17838654

A ban on openly carrying unloaded handguns in public moved out of the state Assembly's Public Safety Committee this week - with little of the drama that typically marks the contentious gun-control debate.

Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, edit sensible DEMOCRAT-Pasadena, who authored the bill, said it was necessary to close a loophole in existing law that allows people to carry unloaded, unconcealed weapons in public.

The bill is a response to a proliferation of "open carry" demonstrations over the past year, Portantino spokeswoman Wendy Gordon said.

<snip>

"Open carrying of weapons is something that belongs on a Hollywood movie set, not on Main Street or in Starbucks," Portantino said at the committee's hearing Tuesday. "You don't need a side arm in order to buy a cheeseburger."

1. I guess that's what accounts for all the Starbuck's blood baths recently
Another post where nothing has happened. You're running up a quite a list of "Nothing Happened" posts, congratulations.

Luckily California lawmaker have solved all their other problems and have the time to address this deadly non-threat.

2. I think in the end this is a good thing.
Because its going to force a showdown in court, and in the end, the gun haters arte going to lose.

Again.

3. Wishful thinking. Truthfully, gun "haters" are probably better than gun "lovers" in many respects.

10. Gun haters try to use fear to pass laws, and spread lies and deception and depend on ignorant people
To get any anti gun laws passed. Yes Rational. Lol

14. How would you know? You don't even believe there is anything marketed as an "assault" weapon.

15. Funny, I've never seen anything sold under that name either
Edited on Thu Apr-14-11 03:34 PM by DonP
I'm sure you can direct us to a web site or several ads somewhere promoting assault weapons. How about an assault weapons brochure or two?

Or are you going to rant some more instead and as usual offer no support or content?

Have you been able to have those evil assault weapons banned in Georgia yet? How about getting concealed carry repealed there?

Or is this another "all talk no results" post?

16. The marketers usually call them "tactical" weapons -- that seem to get a rise out of buyers.

17. So in your world "Tactical" is the same word as "Assault"?
You have a very strange dictionary.

So again, what are you doing about the problems with guns in your own state? Should we assume you're doing jack or shit or jack and shit?

20. Let's make it simple-- these guns are marketed to people who are attracted to their killing capacity

I don't care if they are just a basic gun modified to look menacing. The fact that people get all hot over them is reason enough to ban them in my opinion. And, if someone has more than one -- I'd hang their photo in the post office. Further, I'd identify folks attracted to such weapons and restrict them from purchasing anything more deadly than a pea-shooter. Finally, I would increase taxes on the rich to fund mental health services for people who have an obvious medical problem.

21. So, to paraphrase what you just said...
If someone wants to buy a particular firearm due to it's ability to be used for self-defense, they should be barred from the purchase.

Wow. Logic don't live long in your world, do it?

24. Some of these guns are not sold for self-defense, unless you expect to be in a fire-fight with 25.

If so, I'd change my life-style or just admit you want to blast away at any opportunity.

32. So looks are more important to you than function?
You'd ban the most popular centerfire rifles in the country because people (horrors) like them?
Do you ever actaully read your posts?

23. And again, if one wants to buy weapons suitable for self-defense....
such a desire should bar them from purchasing them.

29. "Catch 22" - if you want it, you can't have it, because you want it
So if I don't want it I can have it, until I decide I want it, then I'm disqualified. Yeah, that's a superior intellect at work. The fact that these are almost never used in crimes doesn't matter, they make somebody all nervous.

It's hard to keep a straight face when people repeatedly and proudly display such abysmal ignorance on an issue, like a gold star on their first crayon drawing.

"I don't know what you call them and don't care. I don't care how powerful or accurate they are or if they are just designed to look scary, I don't have to know because I'm just smarter and better than all of you and I want them all banned becaue you people want to buy them."

And for some reason these people actually feel mentally and morally superior to the rest of us.

Just Wow!

33. A sling shot or even a ball point pen can be an "assault weapon",
if it is used to assault someone. When I was working in California, we were told that we couldn't carry pocket knives on the job. We still carried them, but we called them
wire insulation removal tools.

Just one more reason that I now spend 100% of my retirement dollars in Arizona. I also feel much safer here, where about 10% to 15% open
carry and probably a much larger percentage are carrying concealed.

12. At least they don't let any cowboy walk around with a loaded gun in most areas. That's progressive.

Returning to the wild west ain't "progressive." It's ludicrous to even try to label it that way.

26. most of these laws were
written in the late 1800s and early 1900s for very unprogressive reasons. Most of the south had stricter gun laws than now. At one time Texas required licences and South Carolina banned handguns for most people (other than police, Klan etc) from 1902-1963. Speaking of progressive, at the time Wyoming was the most progressive state in the union.

31. This bill is going down in flames....
....just like the last one against open carry that was proposed. The current governor is pro gun-rights, more so than Arnold. Wishful hand wringing of the OP in the form of another drive-by post that's long on rhetoric and short on substantive reasoning.
