Orlando Mayor Dyer, police Chief Demings participate in gun violence rally

Mayor Buddy Dyer and Police Chief Val Demings, as well as DeLand City Commissioner Vonzelle Johnson, spoke at the event, one of multiple such events on the campaign's nationwide tour.

Its stated aim is to urge legislation to ensure that people legally prohibited from purchasing guns are entered into background check systems and to require checks "for every gun sale in America.".

The campaign was created by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, described on the event's website as a "bi-partisan coalition of 550 American mayors."

The coalition was co-founded by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, of New York, and Mayor Tom Menino, of Boston. It boasts the support of more than 30 mayors from the state of Florida, including Dyer.
