University of Tennessee musters opposition to campus gun legislation
http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2011/apr/18/ut-musters-opposition-campus-gun-legislation/

KNOXVILLE -- Campuses across Tennessee are revving up protests today to fight legislation that would allow employees at public colleges to carry guns on campus.

Students at the University of Tennessee called a news conference this morning on campus to speak out against the legislation. The board of the UT Knoxville Alumni Association passed a resolution opposing the measure this weekend.

edit: University of TN President Joe DiPietro "The bottom line is that we don't believe there is any place for guns on campus," DiPietro said after Saturday's UT athletics board meeting on the Knoxville campus.

"Would you feel safe if your professor brought a gun to the classroom or laboratory?" the release states. "What if you brought your family to a football game at an emotionally-charged Neyland Stadium full of 100,000 people, and the UT employee sitting next to you brought his gun?

GOP/NRA over-reach is fostering a whole new generation of anti-gun activists

1. Do you have evidence to present that indicates that lawful carriers are a problem?
Or is it just about your personal distaste for those impertenent enough to take legal measures to safeguard themselves?

5. I agree that you "have a problem"
Taking away my legal weapon will not solve your problem.

11. You certainly want to. You've also called me insane for owning one.
It's pretty easy to see where the problem lies.

6. Obviously laws should be based on how people "feel" about an issue
Certainly we can't use the actual black letter law to determine things.

Soon, we should be able to legislate by counting bumper stickers in selected parking lots to guide our legislatures.

Funny how ugly that would sound if we were talking about how local people felt about anything else, doesn't it? Voting, lunch counters, schools, water fountains?

Boy, making choices based on expressed feelings could set us back 60 years, but ... as long as its about firearms, screw 'em all, right?

10. What's the problem?

The simple fact is in most places people can carry a concealed firearm. Odds are you have already been near someone doing so, and never knew it.

If a person is judged by the state safe enough to walk down main street with a firearm while surrounded by hundreds of his fellow citizens, then there is no reason why he can't likewise walk across a college campus.

We know that people with CCW permits are many times less likely than your average citizen to be involved in any kind of crime at all, let alone firearm crime. The fact is you should feel safer sitting next to a CCW permit holder because you would know that that person is less likely to engage in criminal activity than someone without a CCW permit.

Yes because that gun is going to leap right out of that holster and start shooting people. Or is the University of Tenn hiring such deranged professors that they will lose control and go postal on the students and staff? Maybe we need to look at the hiring practices instead.
