GUNS IN THE NEWS - March 2, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; thsi allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

4. Ex-Raven charged in alleged abduction (MD)
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 08:59 AM by MrBenchley
"A former Ravens player was charged yesterday with helping to plan the kidnapping of a Baltimore man who ended up naked and bleeding from a gunshot wound on Cal Ripken's doorstep Thanksgiving evening, police said.
Dameon Deshaun Hunter, a running back who was cut from the Ravens during training camp last year after one season with the team, was charged in an arrest warrant with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, according to Baltimore County police. No arrest has been made.
The suspects demanded Robbins give them $10,000 but reduced the ransom to $2,000 as time passed, police said. When he couldn't raise the cash using his cell phone to call friends and family, Robbins was told to undress and walk away from the car. As he ran from the suspects, he was shot in the back, police said. "

5. For young Brian, a friend is gone (NC)
"GRANITE FALLS - Thursday morning's phone call brought good news for 11-year-old Brian Mitcham.
It was Brian's best friend, Eric Hall, also 11, calling to say that Caldwell County was buried under several inches of snow, and the two boys wouldn't have to go to school.
Brian eventually made it to Eric's Thursday afternoon, about 4 p.m., and it was weird, he said, to find authorities there. It was even weirder when he asked if Eric wanted to come out -- Eric always wanted to come out -- and someone said he was busy.
Then, Thursday evening, Brian learned that Eric had been shot to death and his sister, Ashley, seriously injured. And the authorities were accusing Eric's mother.
Janet Hall, 36, remained without bond Monday in the Caldwell County jail, charged with first-degree murder in Eric's death, attempted murder in her daughter's shooting and felony speeding to elude arrest."

6. Man shoots wife and then himself, police say (TX)
RICHLAND HILLS - Police believe a 75-year-old man shot his wife Monday afternoon, seriously injuring her, and then fatally shot himself, authorities said.
Barbara Richards, 59, was listed in critical condition Monday night at Harris Methodist Fort Worth hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, Richland Hills Detective Rob Moore said.
At 5:20 p.m., police re-sponded to a 911 call from a woman at a house in the 7000 block of Richlynn Terrace who said she had been shot, Moore said.
At the house, police also found 75-year-old Gerald Richards dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Moore said. A handgun was recovered from the house."

7. 3 are killed at east-side Detroit home
"Gunfire rang out Monday evening on Detroit's east side, leaving three men dead and one injured and fueling fears in the wake of a recent wave of city violence.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy called the shootings tragic.
"Unless we can get it to its core, we're going to continue to have these kinds of problems," said Worthy, who unveiled a two-year plan to combat crime during a community forum last week.
Howard Hughey, a spokesman for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, declined to comment late Monday on the latest of 62 homicides since Jan. 1. "

"But Hardman said he suspected the two-story green and white home was a drug house. "

We're losing the war on drugs and the illegal drug dealers have a lot of these gun battles. If we legalize drugs, we put the illegal dealers out of business, reduce their need to battle over turf and deals gone bad, with a result of fewer gun deaths...

11. Paramedic goes home after ‘miraculous' recovery (MO)
"Paramedic Mary Seymour thought she was going to die.
Instead, Seymour went home from Research Medical Center on Monday afternoon, a week after she was critically wounded by bullets fired by a gunman who shot at emergency crews responding to a fire in south Kansas City.
Joe Capra works at the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which sits behind Wright's house. Capra said he was standing next to a fire pumper, looking at the burning house, when he heard the first shots.
Capra said a barrage of .50-caliber rounds penetrated the fire pumper as firefighters took cover. He and other witnesses hid behind a car in the union's driveway."

Those would be rounds from the .50 caliber weapons that the RKBA crowd keep telling us pose no possible public menace.

12. Relative Charged in Miss. Family Slaying
"YAZOO CITY, Miss. - More than two weeks after a family of three vanished on Valentine's Day, authorities found their bodies in a wooded area and charged the father's cousin with capital murder.
In a Yazoo County courthouse, while authorities were still searching for the bodies about 100 miles away, Earnest Lee Hargon — a cousin of Michael Hargon — heard the three capital murder charges read and was ordered held without bond. Friends and relatives of the family, many visibly shaken, attended the brief court appearance.
Blood and spent bullet casings were discovered at the family's home in Yazoo County after their disappearance. Investigators have not found a .22-caliber weapon that apparently was fired in the house. "

"In an isolated area overlooking the Susquehanna River, Newberry Township police found the spot from which the shooter or shooters were firing.
They recovered dozens of bullet casings, but there was no shooter in sight. Police said a shooter or shooters may have used high-powered weapons.
"They first heard gunshots up in this area, and then they realized that some were being directed right at them. They heard them flying over their heads and they saw them splashing all around them in the water. They pulled up their anchors and they left," Police Chief David Duffy said. "

14. Armored Guard Killed in Heist (CA)
Yeah, it's just the moment to make assault weapons more available to criminals and loonies.

"At least five men armed with high-powered assault rifles ambushed an armored car behind a busy South Los Angeles bank Monday morning, killing a guard and making off with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
The suspects fired more than 50 rounds in a gun battle with one of the armored-truck guards before fleeing in a light-colored van.
Officials said they were concerned by the overwhelming force of the attack. Some compared it with the 1997 North Hollywood shootout in which officers engaged two heavily armed bank robbers.
"The firepower made it like a mini North Hollywood shooting," LAPD Capt. Al Michelena said.
About 10:45 a.m., as one of the truck's three guards was unloading the cash, the suspects unleashed a torrent of bullets that pockmarked surrounding buildings and caused workers and patrons inside the bank to hit the floor in panic."

My point is that the VPC's assessment completely contradicts everything the Brady Center and most other anti-gun enthusiasts have to say about the AWB. The VPC recognizes the law's fundamental flaws, though they spin the gun makers' efforts to comply with it as exploitation of "loopholes".

59. Huh?
How will lifting the ban, which has had no discernale effect, make it easier for criminals to acquire illegal weapons? The criminals are gonna arm themselves anyway. That's proven over and over again. IF we non-criminals are all disarmed, then you get results like they have in England. Rampant crime with no protection....unless you consider holding a phone in your hand after dialing 911 protection. If that's what you want for you, fine. I believe in peace through superior firepower.

16. Senate OKs Assault Weapons Ban Extension
A dark day for dishonest right wing pinheads everywhere....

"The Senate voted Tuesday to extend for another decade a ban on military-style assault weapons and to require background checks on buyers at private gun shows, giving Democrats rare victories on gun legislation that would also deny crime victims the ability to sue gunmakers and dealers.
The White House had preferred both Democratic bills be kept off the legislation immunizing the gun industry from liability suits, the National Rifle Association's top priority this year. "

Two men living in a home in the 13000 block of Ardmore Street were the victims of an ambush, according to police.
A gunman reportedly burst into the home and opened fire, killing a 56 year old man. A second man living at the home had an asthma attack and was treated at the scene by emergency crews.
Investigators obtained a warrant to search the home. Police confiscated guns from the residence, but it was not known if there was any substantial evidence found, Local 4 reported. "

36. Senate Draws Gun Control Into Presidential Politics
"Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry touted his credentials as a lifelong hunter to deliver a scathing rebuke on Tuesday against President Bush (news - web sites)'s failure to support a ban on assault weapons.
As the Republican-led Senate handed Democrats a high-profile victory, Kerry used the Senate floor forum to push the gun control debate into the presidential campaign, accusing Bush of "walking away" from a commitment he made to support the ban on sales of military-style weapons to civilians.
"When he ran for president in 2000, President Bush promised the American people that he would work to renew the assault weapons ban. But now, under pressure, he is walking away from that commitment," the Massachusetts senator said in his first Senate speech this year.
Lawmakers said the decisions by Kerry and Democratic presidential contender Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) of North Carolina to take a detour from the campaign trail to vote on the gun control amendments changed the dynamic of the Senate debate and was central to the 52-47 vote to extend the assault weapons ban, due to expire in September. Columbine student wounded in shooting rampage settles his lawsuit

DENVER -
A student who was wounded in the Columbine High School bloodbath and whose rescue from a second-floor window was broadcast on live TV has settled his lawsuit against sheriff's officials for $117,500.

"This had such a tremendous impact on the community, the students, the families," Jefferson County spokesman John Masson said Tuesday. "A protracted trial would have reopened all those wounds."

Patrick Ireland was 17 at the time of the attack; his injuries left him partly paralyzed and affected his ability to speak, read and write. He now attends Colorado State University.

Ireland argued that sheriff's officials were negligent by not getting him medical aid sooner. But a federal judge ruled in 2002 that there was no evidence of that.

CSGV Claims Victory in Defeating Gun Immunity Bill

Senate Rebukes Gun Lobby on Assault Weapons Ban, Gun Show Loophole

Contact: Blaine Rummel of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, 202-408-0061 ext. 118

WASHINGTON, March 2 /U.S. Newswire/ --
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) today claimed victory over the stunning defeat of S. 1805 -- the gun lobby's top legislative priority which would have granted unprecedented legal immunity to the gun industry. The Senate voted down the measure 90-8.

NRA board member and Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) urged senators to vote against the bill after approval of amendments that would have renewed the assault weapons ban (S. 2109) and required background checks on all gun sales at gun shows (S. 1807).

"The importance of today's vote cannot be overstated. Senators not only rejected the NRA's top legislative priority; they also approved measures that would help ensure public safety," said Joshua Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. "Today's vote dispenses with the myth of an all-powerful gun lobby."

Despite favorable political terrain over the past three years, the gun lobby has been unable to win a single major victory. In fact, the only way the gun lobby could win anything at all was by attaching anti-law enforcement provisions to a massive omnibus spending package. The provisions would never have achieved passage on their own.

43. Yup - it's spin
It might make them feel better to claim as an anti-gun victory, but the fact is, if the anti-gun ammendments had not been tacked onto the bill as poison pills, the bill very likely would have passed, in my opinion. It only bombed once it became tainted with anti-gun ammendments. At that point, the entire bill became unpalatable to both the anti-gun senators because it was favorable to the gun manufacturers, and to the pro-gun senators because it contained anti-gun ammendments.

As it stands now, the assault weapons ban will expire. I count that as a bigger victory than protecting the gun manufacturers.

Since the AWB and loophole amendments passed, perhaps they can be combined into a single bill, co-sponsored by Senators from both parties, and then we can sit back and watch the fun!!!!

GOP reps have to run around explaining to voters this fall why they want to let assault weapons back on the market and let crooks bypass background checks at gun shows...

That'll play real well to moderates.....NOT.

50. Your assessment of the results of the expiration is not accurate
No guns are actually banned by the AWB. Just about every one that existed in 1994 is still out there in private hands. And according to your buddies at the VPC gun manufacturers skirted around the ban and kept producing AWs anyway.

49. Whether or not they'd pass it depends on which version they see
They may well pass a 10-year extension of the present ban, but a permanent and/or stricter ban would have a much more difficult time.

Ban proponents are going to shoot themselves in the foot by trying to get too much of a ban. If they push too hard they'll end up with nothing. Zealots are often incapable of seeing the need for compromise.

Spineless NRA: Well, I guess that's ok, just make you tell everybody we screamed long and hard before we let you have half of the cookie.

Brady bunch: Good. Oh, and by the way, we're going to take the other half of your cookie tomorrow.

44. Man Admits Shooting Neighbor's Cat (TX)
"Rusty Carr still can't believe what happened while he was in his front yard Saturday afternoon.
Carr said he heard two loud popping sounds. Moments later, Carr said he saw his cat "Batty" barely breathing and dragging her back legs as she came from a neighbor's yard.
Carr said he then walked over to his neighbor's house and asked him if he had shot his cat.
"'Did you shoot my cat?'" Carr said he asked the man. "At this time, he came out his garage and said, 'Yes, I shot your cat.'" "

but the cat probably had it coming - being the vile, nasty, sneaky, vermin that was it's lot for being born a cat. Personally, I prefer anti-freeze. It's a better show what with all the seizures and spasms.

I cannot abide cats. If all you cat lovers out there dislike my humor - oh well.

If he'd shot a dog, I'd furnish the rope for the lynching.

56. cat-hating trash are of the devil
Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 01:16 AM by NorthernSpy
In my experience, a lot of people who hate cats and try to hurt them are actually pant-pissing scared of widdle bitty kitties, but are too embarrassed to say so. Perhaps that's the case with this guy. I don't know.

The great thing about the new animal abuse statutes is that felony charges can be laid against the piece of human garbage who hurt the cat in the news story. That means there's a very great chance that when this slime mold finally crawls out of prison, he'll be forbidden to so much as touch a firearm -- for the rest of his life.

I hope the authorities do grab his gun, and I hope they enjoy it. It'll be sweet to see the look on his face when he realizes that from now on, he must go through life shorn of his precious tool. I hope he shrieks like a melting witch.

But first, let him do hellish time and get fined down to his last nickel.

And please, Lord, when this creep dies, let him come back as a rodent.

Mary

57. I think you're right about the fear part
Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 11:38 AM by slackmaster
While on a weekend wilderness outing up in Gold Country several years ago I met a man who loved dogs and loathed cats. He referred to cats as "FILTHY animals! They carry disease." I hadn't mentioned to him that I prefer cats. But to me cats and dogs are a lot more similar than not. Yes, cat saliva is more likely to carry dangerous bacteria than is dog saliva, but cats do a much better job cleaning their fur and burying feces, etc. So it seems to me a wash which is "cleaner"; the cleanliness of any particular animal more dependent on how well its owner takes care of it than any genetic factor.

Anyway, on the trail heading out of the Stanislaus National Forest I saw the cat-hating dog guy walking with his big smelly German Shepherd. The two of them stopped on a trail about 100 feet from the Stanislaus River (which supplies drinking water for thousands of families). The man dropped his drawers and pinched a giant twisting "loaf" right in the middle of the path, on top of a rock. He didn't make any effort to bury the turd or cleanse himself. And he did this about 50 feet in front of two teenage girls.

I found it pretty ironic that he was accusing cats of being "FILTHY animals".
