Police Chief Shot & Killed (Grant, Alabama)
Grant police chief shot and killed

The Associated Press

Grant Police Chief Verlon Lemaster was shot to death and at least one other person was wounded Friday morning after a confrontation at a house in Grant, authorities said.

Lemaster accompanied Marshall and Madison County deputies to the home on Cathedral Caverns Highway looking for a stolen gun shortly after 10 a.m., Marshall County District Attorney Steve Marshall told The Huntsville Times.

When they confronted those at the house, shots were exchanged. Lemaster was shot in the face and died at 11:45 a.m. after being flown to Huntsville Hospital, hospital spokesman Jeremy Hosier said.

1. Chief Verlon Lemaster was shot while serving
a warrant for two runaway 17 year olds with stolen pistols. One the guns were stolen and second under federal and state law neither boy was old enough to have possession of a handgun. These laws did not protect Chief Lemaster, would any more have? So far this year three Alabama police officers have been killed by teens, two of them by a gun taken from a police officer. Also speaking as an LEO, Chief Lemaster knew and accepted the hazards of his job.

2. The incident occurred during the investigation of a crime. It is sad
that anyone was killed, but it is likely that the law enforcement officers were not as cautious as they should have been. It is also possible that Lemaster has little or no training for his position.

demsrule4life, I agree with your post re gun laws. I wish one of the gun-control group would provide a rough outline of a law that would have prevented this tragedy.

In the absence of a response after frequent requests, I'm forced to believe they don't have a clue -- just like me.

4. What a silly comment!
There are times the RKBA sounds like a parody of itself.

"These laws did not protect Chief Lemaster, would any more have? "
Gee, the law against murder didn't protect him either; want to repeal that?
