GUNS IN THE NEWS--May 20, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

No state income tax, low property taxes, great job market, a million things to do.

Who we have as a governor really doesn't keep me up much at night. Neither does the fact that I don't live in New Jersey.

Who we have as a governor really doesn't keep me up much at night.

I mean, not that it's necessarily surprising.

Whaddaya think -- will who you have as a governor be able to pull that little stunt off again in November? You know ... the one where his brother ends up as the President of the US?

Nah, I'm sure the most polluted state in the country is a wonderful place to live. Criminal neurotics with guns, no law-abiding citizens able to fight back, and the City of Patterson. Heaven on Earth. It does have one helluva fine golf course, so even Jersistan has its good points.

I'm glad that my grandmother got out of "reeking cesspool of a state, populated by gangsters and corrupt to the core"...those are her words. Frankly, young man, New Jersey is about as authoritarian as a state can get. That is a conversation for another thread. Remember, dear Benchley, everybody believes you.

It's not a rifle at all.

But why should facts get in the way of a good anti-gun article? Blame the gun, but ignore the dealer or straw buyer who supplied this mentally ill man with firearms.

14. Girl held after gun is found in her backpack (MI)
"A 15-year-old Detroit girl was in juvenile detention Wednesday after security officers at Martin Luther King High School found a loaded .380 semiautomatic handgun in her backpack. Her boyfriend said the gun belonged to him, as did several witnesses.
Detroit police officers from the 7th (Mack) Precinct were called to the school at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday after security officers had detained the girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend.
Witnesses told security officers that the boyfriend had been showing off the gun to five other male students in the gymnasium. When officers detained him, however, officers found no gun.
A witness told officers to check the teen's girlfriend standing in the hallway. Inside her backpack was a Hi-Point brand firearm loaded with what police said were "drilled-out hollow-point bullets." "

23. Bizarre debate on Senate floor (CA)
"Sacramento -- Foreplay got the nod over gunplay Wednesday by state senators deciding what types of shows to allow at the Cow Palace.
A debate over banning gun shows at the Cow Palace turned into an argument over whether the Exotic Erotic Ball should be barred as well.
Through a parliamentary maneuver, Republicans in the Senate sought to amend Speier's bill to also ban the presence of the annual Exotic Erotic Ball, billed as "the world's wildest and sexiest party." Democrats voted to defeat the amendments.
"You are voting to keep live sex acts in a state facility going on," Sen. Bill Morrow, R-Oceanside (San Diego County), told his colleagues. Morrow also passed out advertisements for the event, which takes place in October, on the Senate floor.
In response, Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, D-San Francisco, deadpanned: "I've never heard of any kids on a playground killed by a live sex act." "

28. Gun groups seek easier concealed-weapons permits (UT)
As if gun owners weren't dangerous and irresponsible enough...

"SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Some pro-gun groups have urged legislators to dump the firearms instruction requirement for obtaining a concealed-weapons permit.
They told the Legislature's Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee on Wednesday that statistics do not show that training and other regulations for permit holders prevent mishaps or misuse of a firearm.
Scott Engen with Gun Owners of Utah urged that the requirements be abandoned.
He said handling a firearm is not much more complicated than using a stapler.
"The consequence of handling those two instruments doesn't even compare," said Sen. Paula Julander, D-Salt Lake City.
Marla Kennedy, executive director of the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah, said nobody be can be sure of the adequacy of training because there is no oversight of the instructors.
She said it also is impossible to produce a review based on the students' actions after getting a permit because their names are not public."

http://www.casperstartribune.net/articles/2004/05/20/news/regional/c6f0bb1b35af468c87256e9a0057b14f.txt

That pretty much sums up the fundamental dishonesty of the gun rights movement: hide the names of permit holders and then announce that no-one can prove they're a menace.
