"Liberal Hunter" Almost Gets Out of Jail
Why he's nothing but a harmless gun collector, your honor...

" May 25, 2004
ROCKFORD -- A judge has ordered the conditional release of a Rockford man who kept a hit list of high-ranking U.S. officials and celebrities, such as former Attorney General Janet Reno and filmmaker Michael Moore.
Michael Breit, 20, faces federal explosives charges. Police found the hit list in his apartment last month along with an arsenal of firearms, knives, bomb-making materials, ammunition, such books as "The Anarchist Cookbook" and "The Turner Diaries," and threatening personal writings and drawings.
There were seven names on the list: Reno, Moore, U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, Sarah Brady, Rosie O'Donnell, U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle and Dan Ortiz, whom court documents say is a political supporter of presidential candidate John Kerry. Each name had the word "marked" written next to it. Breit allegedly told investigators that meant "marked to die."
Rockford police took Breit into custody April 18 after investigating a report of shots fired at Breit's Sunnyside Drive apartment. Breit told police he accidentally shot a round from his new AK-47 assault rifle into a door frame as he attempted to dismantle the gun. Police asked Breit if they could look around. That's when they discovered the cache of guns and bomb-making materials.
Breit allegedly told investigators that he was stockpiling weapons in case there was a revolution and he needed to use them against liberals. Police say they found an essay Breit wrote, "Revolutionary Strike Force," which outlined a plan to kill 1,500 people at a Democratic presidential caucus. "

Fortunately, sanity ruled...

"May 26, 2004
ROCKFORD -- A 20-year-old Rockford man accused of amassing firearms and bomb-making materials, thinking up terrorist acts and maintaining a list of people that he had marked for death will remain in federal custody pending explosives charges.
U.S. District Judge Philip Reinhard overturned Magistrate Judge P. Michael Mahoney's decision Monday to release Michael Breit into the custody of his mother and grandfather.
After hearing arguments Tuesday morning, Reinhard said he lacked confidence in Breit's family to control him.
"I think he is a danger. This is beyond a weapons case," Reinhard said. "There are no conditions that I can impose beyond that of the magistrate judge that can ensure the safety of this community."
After further investigation, court records show, police discovered several firearms, several hundred rounds of ammunition, several knives, a sword, an inert hand grenade, bags and boxes of fireworks, and materials to make bombs. "

As David Neiwert says..."Imagine if, say, it had been a Muslim man caught with a similar plan, but targeting John Ashcroft and Rush Limbaugh. Think that might make the evening news?"

5. When hate speech goes unanswered
When Coulter, Savage, Hannity and their lesser known ilk are allowed to spew all over the airwaves with no counter to their bile, it begins to sound normal to a lot of people. That's when you start to find more and more idiots out there ready and willing to act on it.

The first reforms of a new government have to be media reforms. Break up the media monopolies and bring back the Fairness Doctrine. Make sure the hate speech echo chamber is dismantled.

I know exactly how a Jew felt in the 1930s in Hitler's Germany.

What's appalling is that if you change "liberals" to right wingers, you can find a bunch of "gun owning democrats" on this board using rhetoric just like "stockpiling weapons in case there was a revolution and he needed to use them."

40. I don't make this argument, but

I don't really think 'prevent' is the correct word. If we're now the tyrannical invader in Iraq (for the sake of argument latest in a long line of the British, Ottomans, Mongols, Greeks and Persians) and the armed men fighting U.S. troops are freedom fighters, don't you think those men find rifles useful? And given we're in the wrong, don't those men have moral grounds to use them in self defense against us?

42. "we can't silence them because we disagree"
Uh, I didn't notice anyone suggesting that anyone could, or should, or wanted to ...

All I've noticed is suggestions that change the channel isn't necessarily the cleverest response to what "they" are saying.

All that free speech ... none of it actually being used to rebut the lies being told by the right wing ...

Is change the channel really what those founders & framers of yours had in mind when they guaranteed that freedom of speech?

I'd always thought that they were kinda hoping to see some actual ideas being discussed in that big marketplace. I tend to think that they'd regard responding to lies and hate with change the channel as a complete rejection of just about everything they had inherited (freedom of speech being a rather old idea by the time they came along) and exerted themselves to preserve and secure.

10. We definitely need more media parity
The media should report facts. When people spout off about creationism, sex ed, school prayer, etc., the media needs to report the facts about the issues. All they do now is give anybody who makes noise a pulpit to preach from. They never mention critical facts like, evolutionary theory is constantly under review in accord with the scientific method, while creationism is trying to prove a pre-formulated conclusion and will stop at nothing to prove it.

Wow, what's that under me? Is that a soap-box? Sorry about that. :)

17. We need a press willing to call a spade a spade
and a fool a fool.

I agree we have a fools in the newsroom problem.

Instead of the vapid "I don't know, what do you think?" Happy Idiot News Talk at the end of a controversial segment on comprehensive sex ed, it should lead into a discussion of practices in foreign countries and how Sweden got it right and that after introducing comprehensive sex ed, teenage pregnancy and the incidence of STDs fell. While in the US, since the patients are running the insane asylum the opposite is occurring.

Ok, I will get off my soap box now.

Wait...

But back to topic. When talking about the latest guns vs crime "Study" (no, I have not seen one that someone has not challenged the results or methodology of) clearly means that gun ownership has an at best minimal impact on crime. (I am thinking of Kellerman's 43 times clam and some of Lott's "findings").

We don't need media parity, we need fewer news models and less radio-spectrum pollution (yes, that means you Pig Boy).

He doesn't sound too bright to me. Especially when he explained to law enforcement that 'marked' meant 'marked to die'.

Since you made the comment about him being a 'harmless gun collector' I would like to ask you how many guns you would allow someone to own.
Is one enough? How about three? Ten? How many is too many?

He constantly spouts off about how everyone (including self-proclaimed gun owner and hunter John Kerry) agrees with his narrow anti-gun viewpoint. Then twenty people show up to tell him off. It's pretty funny, actually.

I mean...this is a Democratic website, and there are three people here who consistently agree with his VPC regurgitations. And one of them is Canadian.

I wouldn't have to go back very far to find a thread in which I pointed out that he tends to get ganged up on. Your crowd pooh-poohed the very idea which you are now embracing.

I also wouldn't have to go back very far to find a thread started by one of your side who was purely and simply agitating against Kerry's election. This may be Democratic Underground, but the standards are a bit different in JPS.
