Local Cops Won't Miss Assault Weapons Ban...(NW IN Times)
http://www.thetimesonline.com/articles/2004/07/26/news/top_news/e64e9722e745fa5286256edc0078d561.txt

an excerpt:

Big shots in the national gun-control debate may party or hang out black crepe paper Sept. 13, when a 10-year ban on assault weapons is expected to end.

Area law enforcement officials expect it to be just another day on the streets.

"I think it makes most police officers uncomfortable knowing the amount of fire power that is out there and available to the percentage of the population that would use it for evil purposes," said David Lain, chief deputy of the Porter County's Sherrif's Department.

"But I don't see that, ban or no ban, that it's going to affect what weapons the bad guys are able to get ahold of."

1. Gee, fat slob...
Sounds like they want the ban strengthened, not dropped altogether...

4. sounds to me that he's saying "crims don't obey bans, so it
doesn't matter what bans are put in place"

5. Sounds more to me
like the people desperate to get their hands on assault weapons, for whatever twisted reasons, are spinning as desperately as they can.

2. Well, if I were a cop
I would probably want to limit as many guns as possible. I wonder what the consensus would be on an honest gun control bill. I would wager that most law enforcement officials would jump on a complete ban on private ownership. Has anyone polled on such a question?

3. If I were a cop, I'd advocate disarming cops.
Lots of cops get shot with their duty weapon.

6. We've got actual cops in JPS. Anyone care to step up and endorse this?
Anyone?

Any cop at all?

12. Actually, what I said
was that if I were a cop I'd advocate disarming cops. Then I mentioned lots of cops get shot with their duty weapons. Of course, I advocate disarming cops right now.

"Some doofus in post #3 suggested that cops would want to have cops disarmed. He was using your username, too - I'd look into that if I were you."

16. "If I were a cop, I'd . . ."
Edited on Mon Jul-26-04 06:27 PM by library_max
But that mustn't be taken to mean that I think any actual cops would . . .

My fault, I guess. I've got to stop trying to look for meaning in your posts.

10. I will endorse it
Most years 1/4 of cops that are shot are shot with their duty weapon. You have never seen those videos of prisoners teaching each other disarming techniques? Go to ODMP.org

13. Retired
31 years. Every year you will hear from some news source that so many police officers died in the line of duty. They don't say how they died. They are counted if they die on duty, don't matter if by natural causes, car accidents, shot, stabbed and so on. The ODMP.ORG list every police officer killed since the beginning of our country and how they died.

14. No skin off your nose, then, if active duty cops are disarmed.
Thanks for your input.

7. Ah, the Northwest Indiana Times - the nation's paper of record.
Trying to base a pretty big conclusion on one little story in one little paper, aren't you? And the actual quotes are all over the place, very far from united in their opposition to the ban.
