Do any of you gungeonites ever have this fantasy? |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-26-04 06:25 PM by Sandpiper
You're all alone, the night is dark, when all of the sudden some crazed criminal jumps out of nowhere to attack you.
But you... you're prepared. You know that carrying a concealed handgun keeps you safe, and you proceed to pull yours out and smoke his ass.

3. That sounds more like a nightmare, actually. My house is... |
|
...secure enough that even with a key you cannot get in unnoticed, even if you shut the power off at the breaker, cut the phone line, and all that jazz.
I know that I would fire if I had to, but there would be no joy in it. It would bother me for the rest of my life that I could not prevent the situation from getting to the point where I had to shoot.

I feel the same way about guns as I do about fire extinguishers. If you have a realistic view of what it would be like to "smoke someone's ass" it's about the last thing you'd want to have to do.

5. Firing a warning shot would be a better idea in that case. |
|
However, the only time it ever happened, I waved my arms and screamed at the top of my lungs and the bear took off.
I take no delight in fantasizing about the death of anyone or anything. I do occasionally fantasize about slapping some of them so hard they'd be picking their teeth out of their rectums, though.

9. firing is warning shot is a bad idea btw |

The bullet is much safer lodged in the bad guys body than richeting around.
Also, a zealous prosecuter will use the fact that you had time to fire a warning shot proved you were not in imminent danger.

I only wish I had a gun so I could one day live out my fantasy.
Actually, my real fantasy is that one day all the gun grabbers will read the current federal firearms laws and at least make an attempt to understand them so then we won't have constant whining about the AWB banning machine guns or banning the SKS or whatever. I know, I know. Completely unrealistic. That's why it's a fantasy. I think I'm more likely to be attacked by some crazed criminal jumping out of nowhere.

As someone who could be described as a gun grabber...
I have read AWB, and I know it doesnt do much for our cause. (although, I find the uprising of disgust of it from the pro gun crowd intersting, these people fight like it was the most important thing on earth, does having your AR-15 decked out to look beautiful really matter that much?).
Just be lucky I wasnt writing the AWB.

44. Yes, and you are a breath of fresh air |
|
even if we completely disagree on the gun issue.
The reason the pro-gun side act like the AWB is the most important thing on earth is because it is going to sunset in a few more weeks. If there were a chance that the Hughes Amendment of the Firearm Owners' Protection Act were going to be repealed or that one of the various import bans was going to be lifted the pro-gun side would be excited by those, but that simply isn't going to happen any time in the near future.

50. I question how much of the base would be lost |
|
by taking on a truly pro-gun stance. At most you'll lose the really hardcore gun grabbers and, quite frankly, they should be voting for the party that's most likely to give them the gun control they want anyway. I made a poll on this very subject a while back and someone else made a similar one after: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=541677http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=542884

29. That is a pretty weak fantasy. |
|
How about this one.
A radical group takes control of the federal government by means of open fraud. They attack fundamental liberties, treat citizens without concern for the law, suppress dissent, remove workplace and environmental protections, bankrupt the treasury, fill the media with coarse propaganda, breed fear, launch a unnecessary war, turn virtually the entire world against a respected nation and generally do the previously unimaginable.
Now, how is that for a fantasy... No, wait!
What was your point again? --- That is puerile to be armed?
I would say that is naive and dangerous not to be... But then again you are entitled to your own fantasies.

That gun owners, who fancy themselves to be protectors of liberty against government tyranny, do not oppose this radical group, but rather, quite the opposite. The majority of them count themselves among the biggest supporters of the radical group that seized control of the federal government.

that many people apparently think that the second amendment supersedes other rights... But I also aware that many people think that keeping honest citizens from owning guns is some sort of panacea for solving gun violence.
I am as disappointed that the pugs play so successfully to some gun owners' narrow minded thinking as I am that some dems seem determined to drive gun owners away from a place in the party -- or put them at such a disadvantage to those who do not follow the law.
And while I am horrified at the number of gun deaths in the US, particularly those of innocents, it is the violence itself that is to be abhorred. If there is some greater risk of innocent death entailed in gun ownership by law abiding citizens, then I for one am willing to bear my share of that risk. (I have nearly been shot on a number of occasions by idiots target shooting or hunting, but I do not seek to diminish this very real risk by limiting either of these activities, except, of course, where hunting threatens species survival. Mind you, I don't hunt, but I can understand that some will do so.)
We can fantasize about this or that, but one thing is certain: that you must own guns before you can use them -- in any circumstances. Many are those who wish for guns after violence strikes them... better that they should have planned a little more in advance.

Have you ever been the victim of violent crime? Someone who has will generally have more empathy than to just ask "why do you want to smoke someone."

Its come to my attention that people here actually do relish the thought of getting the chance to blow away a home invader. To flash their "manliness" in the form of, "oh look, Im armed to the teeth, anyone wanna try and touch me, ill fill ya full of lead" yet they seem to lack any mature understanding of what shooting someone means, especially shooting the wrong person, which IS a risk in pretty much any situation.
