Guns and travel... a question. |
|
What do the CCW holders do when they travel to somewhere where they cannot carry their firearm (abroad for instance)?
What would you do on a visit to Britain, for instance, where the carrying of any weapon in public is a criminal offence?
Do any of you actively avoid going to places where you can't carry?

2. I have heard one or two posters say that they boycott.... |

countries where firearms ownership isn't allowed.
Laughably, this wasn't because they weren't allowed to take their guns with them, it was in protest against the repression of the poor, unarmed masses who were being denied their freedom.......
Holiday in Cuba, anyone?

3. I leave mine at home when I travel to areas it's not allowed |

I carry for specific reasons; because I've received numerous threats because of m position in the corrections system. I doubt that I'll be running into any former inmates or their families and friends that have threatened my life outside of the U.S.
I don't go to NYC, Chicago, or many other areas in the U.S. that bar firearms carry because I can't abide large cities or California and New Jersey as a whole. It has nothing to do with whether or not I can carry my handgun.

4. Same as non-CCW holders I assume |
|
I occasionally carry a handgun when it's legal and seems appropriate. For example, if the police are searching for an escaped felon in my neighborhood, or if I am camping out in the wilderness.
Do any of you actively avoid going to places where you can't carry?
No.

5. trip to Corsica this past spring |
|
Since I no longer CCW regularly, no firearms wasn't that big a deal, but it really felt weird not even having pepper spray on me.
It seems I could maybe have applied for a French license for the OC spray, but I didn't find out until it was too late, and I couldn't translate the license application well enough to be confident that I knew what I was doing.
I didn't take my pocket folding knife, either, because I couldn't tell if the French law against "cold steel" (their words) applied to pocket folders or just bayonets.
As far as safety, I practiced some that old USMC hand-to-hand before I left, and once there kept looking over my shoulder a lot.
I also figured that the infamous Corsican underworld wouldn't take too kindly to anyone messing with the tourism economy, and assumed they were "supplementing" the Gendarmerie's law enforcement efforts at tourist security.

6. I weigh the risks and make a decision. |

I don't travel overseas often, so that isn't an issue. I have yet to see all of this great land, so I concentrate on that. I have no plans on visiting the UK or Europe for many years. I do my best to avoid unenlightened states, but will visit at times. I actively avoid any posted business (not hard to do, virtually nobody posts)
