GUNS IN THE NEWS - August 7 - 9, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.

5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do yourself and everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

Investigation continues in apparent murder-suicide

SAN ANTONIO
Police were continuing their investigation but had few details in an apparent murder-suicide that left four family members dead.

Police say the bodies of 29-year-old Robert Trevino, 27-year-old Rebecca Contreras and their eight-year-old son Nathan were found Friday morning in a rural Poteet home. A second son, three-year-old Masion, died after being airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio.

Poteet Police Chief Frank Leal declined to identify the shooter or detail circumstances leading up to the deaths. However, relatives said authorities told them that a domestic dispute had escalated into murder-suicide.

Two teens' deaths probably the result of a murder-suicide, police say

LEXINGTON, Ky. --
The deaths of two Lexington teenagers in a shooting appear to be the result of a murder-suicide, police said Thursday.

David Nolan, 17, died Wednesday inside his home in west Lexington. Thomas Allan Woodrum, 18, died at 2:45 a.m. EDT Thursday at University of Kentucky Hospital, according to the Fayette County coroner's office. That office said Woodrum's death was being investigated as a murder and Nolan's death was being investigated as a suicide.

Lexington Police Lt. James Curless said it appears that Nolan shot Woodrum before turning the gun on himself.

"As the investigation stands today, no one else has been identified as being involved," Curless said. "There are no other suspects."

4. Keyes fires up GOP faithful (IL)
Another quality "gun rights" candidate...

"Alan Keyes strode onto the Illinois stage Sunday and began one of the speeches of a lifetime with two little words: "Thank you."
"Thank YOU!" the crowd roared with gratitude at finally having a GOP candidate for U.S. Senate.
Keyes, a Maryland resident, doesn't even have a home here yet, but he boomed dramatically: "I have confidence because the victory is for God."
Keyes stirred the crowd of party faithful, anti-abortion activists and homeschoolers with a speech that started with media-bashing and hit strong on the issues where he considers Democratic challenger Barack Obama vulnerable: gun rights and abortion."

6. Check this out....
"Keyes still owes $524,169 from his two presidential bids, according to federal elections records. He also owes $7,481 in unpaid state income taxes in his home state of Maryland, according to court records.
The state filed a lien against Keyes in December 2001 for those unpaid taxes. Bill Pascoe, a Keyes adviser, said the tax bill was erroneous and Keyes only owed $152, which he paid on Friday."

7. In Swing States, Kerry Reaches for the Gun Votes
Yeah, but remember, it's gun cotnrol advocates that are attacking the ticket, to hear th epropaghanda...

registration required
"We're going to be very active," promises Wayne LaPierre, the gun lobby's longtime executive vice president. LaPierre says the NRA will spend $20 million this year, roughly the same amount it laid out in 2000 on behalf of George W. Bush and his allies. But this time, the money will be more targeted and will also be supplemented by a vastly expanded network of volunteer activists. Over the past two years, the NRA has recruited its most energetic members and directed them to organize voters in more than 400 congressional districts nationwide.
Those "election victory coordinators" have been preparing voting drives for months. Through telephone, e-mail and door-to-door canvassing, the coordinators have identified thousands of fellow NRA members and other sympathizers. And to each of them they've relentlessly depicted the Democratic nominee as what LaPierre calls "a Second Amendment phony."
Despite what Kerry's commercials imply, LaPierre says, the Democrat doesn't support the Constitution's Second Amendment right to bear arms. For two decades, LaPierre says, Kerry has voted consistently for gun-control legislation and against the gun lobby.
The NRA is making that case to the general public as well -- in newspaper, radio and television ads. The organization has prepared a 30-minute commercial, for airing in September, in which people from Kerry's home state of Massachusetts call him an elitist rich guy who may hunt occasionally but doesn't back gun-owners' rights. And in a NRA commercial that's already being broadcast in tossup states, LaPierre puts it this way: "Senator Kerry, how can you talk out of both sides of your mouth and keep a straight face?"

Good thing we have all those pro-Democrat messages on gun owners forums...oh that's right, they're scarcer than hens' teeth, and our "pro gun democrats" have nothing but excuses as to why they can't post any....

10. Shootout leaves residents in shock (NC)
"CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Residents of one northwest Charlotte neighborhood are still in shock after witnessing a shootout just after 6 p.m. Saturday. The shots were fired at the intersection of LaSalle Street and Senior Drive, just blocks away from West Charlotte High School.
On Sunday, the community returned to its normal slow pace, only now neighbors are keeping a watchful eye on the streets. In all, at least 50 shots were fired and witnesses say following the shootout, one suspect ran down the street with a shotgun and pistol in hand. Two others were shot but are expected to recover.
Most residents in this neighborhood are senior citizens who moved in decades ago. They say they cannot believe what they saw.
"I'm in disbelief because this never happened here,” said resident Donald Belk. “I grew up in this neighborhood all my life. I came back in this neighborhood, bought a house in this neighborhood and too see something like this is unheard of.""

11. Man dies of gunshot wound after near three hour standoff (AL)
Wonder how much this idiotic celebration of the Second Amendment cost taxpayers?

"The standoff began about 12:30 p-m at a residence on Jefferson Avenue in Birmingham.
Dozens of officers were called to the scene after the gunman, identified as Benjamin Griggs, fired several shots.
Griggs refused to surrender and fired shots at police. Officers, seeking to end the standoff, fired tear gas into the home and the suspect reportedly shot again. That's when police opened fire, then stormed the house. A coroner pronounced Griggs dead on the scene."

An anonymous phone call tipped officers to Droogs' location at 10 a.m., and officers and SWAT members surrounded the house and persuaded him to surrender, said Police Capt. Allan Sharp.
