Effective crime control: $500 reward for information on gun crimes
"Detroit officials are hoping to reduce gun violence by offering a $500 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of people with illegal guns.

The program, called Operation Gun Stop, was announced Wednesday. It is a joint partnership of the Detroit Police Foundation, a nonprofit group established last year by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick; and the Alliance for a Safer Greater Detroit.

“We believe this program will have a dramatic impact in helping us get weapons and criminals off the streets,” said Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings. "

Sounds like a good idea to me. Any thoughts?

3. No bounty on cars?
Our trigger-happy chums were saying in another thread that cars were more of a problem than guns...why is there no $500 bounty on cars?

Here's what they said just yesterday: "By the way, are cars only used to kill and maim? They sure do that trick well. How come we never hear about outlawing cars?"..."Arent you MOST concerned with preventing unnecessary deaths?" ..."If preventing early death is the goal, getting rid of cars would be a better goal. The numbers speak for themselves. If we don't go after the greater cause of death, like cars, then we need a new argument for going after guns." ..."The ratio of bullets fired to injury/death is also extremely low, probably lower than car contact. What is your point? I knew someone who jumped in front of a car on the freeway. I know of a shitload of cases where a vehicle was used in the commission of those crimes. " ...."A car is too a weapon, if used as one..."

Why, you'd almost think people in Detroit thought the argument that cars were more dangerous than guns was mindless horseshit, or something...

6. I'm surprised more of our trigger-happy chums
aren't enraged about this...I thought they'd want Detroit's taxpayers to pay for MORE guns to aid those folks who couldn't afford them...or to help those already with guns upgrade to machine guns

After all, isn't that the RKBA cause's magic bullet for crime? Seems like that "liberal progressive" Alan Keyes was just advocating that the other day...

4. Cool! You could make some money this way too! I wonder
how rewards are treated under state tax law there. I hope the money is exempt. :)

9. They should up it.
Make it $2000 and free-healthcare for a year.

Really incentivise the turning in of criminals who use or possess firearms.

10. You know, that free healthcare thing is a genius
idea. That would really incentivise the poorer, who are in any case more likely to know of such offences... I like it!

11. Actually....

It should be $2000 cash tax-free, free healthcare (for one year or whilst in full-time education, whichever is longer) and a full college scholarship or on-the-job skilled apprenticeship (including a living expenses allowance).

Really start to make a dent in the causes of crime and at the same time put a dent in firearms crime.
