Help stop the Govenators 50 cal ban
Well all I am trying to help our Kali brothers in their attempt to stop the Repuke Arnold from banning 50 cal rifles in California.

I would post this in the Activism section, but I think that few people would care.

I posted it here in their Gungeon so us gun loving Democrats can help our brothers in Cali defeat Arnold and this BS bill.
Thanks,
Tom

sample letter:

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

• Stop AB-50 and stop illegal “Ghost Voting” tactics used by democrats.

• Support both your Republican constitutes and the Democrats who said NO to this useless bill.

• Tell the liberal Democrats we want practical crime bills not useless bills.

• Tell the liberal Democrats to quit spending our valuable tax dollars on useless bills.

• These bolt action rifles have never been used in a crime and weigh about 30 pounds.

• This bill turns law abiding citizens into criminals, just like the state AWB does.

• This bill bans 50cal blackpowder guns which the BATF considers "non-guns", and bans 50cal handguns used for legal hunting.

Thank you,

5. Before he passed away...
my grandfather used to hunt elk using a Sharp's .50 caliber (with rolling block) that he had been given by his grandfather upon his death. He preferred it when hunting elk for several reasons:
1) The range advantage it gave him in rough, mountainous country - he always had a good 300-400 yard advantage over my .300 Savage.
2) The power of the .50 round was always sufficient to always knock his target down & stun it if it didn't kill it outright, so he didn't have to incur the risk and danger of tracking it into heavy brush to finish the job if the first shot didn't kill it.
3) It kept the memory of his grandfather alive, and he could impart that memory to his children & grandchildren.
4) It was a damn fine weapon and a lot of fun to shoot!

Why should a .50 cal weapon be illegal? Has there been a spate of crimes using this particular caliber weapon? Or is it just that it looks so "scary"?

12. Ack!
a single shot rifle is one thing

a handgun or machine gun is something else again.

The Cali ban is aimed at, mostly, single shot and bolt action .50's. It DOES NOT pertain to .50 caliber pistols, which are a completely different round or to machine guns, which are regulated by the NFA of 1934.

What the ban DOES affect are single shot .50 BMG rifles. The two exceptions to this is the Barret M82A1 (a.k.a the M107) which is a semi auto rifle with a 10 round magazine, and Safety Harbor Firearms makes a bolt action with a 3 round magazine. These rifles have been around for 20 years, during which time they have been involved in almost no crimes. These rifles are expensive (around $3,500 for the cheapest) and huge (25 pounds and nearly 5.5 feet long). With there being only two repeating .50 BMGs out there and the rest being single shot rifles, are you still going to tell me that these single shot rifles should be banned?

13. Not so
the RAMO M650 and Barett M95 are also both magazine fed (7 and 5 rounds respectively) for example. And that is only the American made rifles which I could find on world.guns.ru, I am sure there are more.

The majority of these things are indeed single shots.

Wow, a couple of the bolt actions have magazines. guess what, so do most hunting rifles.

56. I don't even know about majority
the listing on that site seemed split fairly evenly. But in any case, it is an easy matter to obtain one that is not single shot, and not even that hard to get a semiautomatic one.

Very few people have the money for that kind of discretionary purchase.

BTW - I'll bet you didn't know the Barrett M82 is already banned in California as an assault weapon because it has a pistol grip.

Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 02:03 PM by Zynx
Assuming he meant a reasonable, responsible range on his .300 Savage (two hundred yards MAX for elk), a Sharps would most certainly have that range advantage. You have to play games with bullet elevation and drift, but it will still have enough freight to get the job done at five hundred or six hundred yards, if the shooter knows what he is doing.

And there are things that will get up from an old-style Sharps .50 cal. Elk hit anywhere near their vitals are not one of them, at least in most cases. There are always exceptions in hunting, but big bullets do make big holes. The thing was developed for long range work against bison, so elk at five hundred yards is believable in my book.

37. Not only is it bullshit, it's irresponsible, past 100 yards
Just because a gun can kill at 500 yards doesn't mean it's a 500 yard weapon.
Lobing 400 or 500 grain bullets at 1500 to 1600 fps, with artillery style trajectory's is hardly a elk rifle.

(so elk at five hundred yards is believable in my book.)
Anybody shooting elk at 500 yard is taking a risk of wounding and losing his elk, and thats with any weapon.
I've been hunting elk for over 25 years. I consider a 30-06 marginal for that type of hunting. I use a 300 Weatherby or a 338 win mag.

7. As you know
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 04:09 PM by thomas82
This is not about needs, it is about wants. If we banned everything that caused people to die or possible death we would ban: cigarettes,SUVs,pools, trampolines etc.

It was the idea of some paranoid soccer mom the the 50 cals need to be banned. Last I heard no helicopters have been shot down in the US with 50 cals right?

If its to keep 50 cals out of the hands of terrorist perhaps we should ban Aircraft, because just in case you have forgotten Terrorist have killed thousands of more people than there has been by a 50 cal.

Fact is according to the VPC http://www.vpc.org/snipercrime.htm in the past 15 years their is only 5 cases where anyone has been shot or killed by a 50 cal.

Compare that to pistols, SUVs, swimming pools, motorcycles and then you would wonder what kind of nut job came up with this ban. The truth is SUVs kill many more people than 50 cals do.

It is obvious the that California will never be gun friendly, Gay friendly yes, gun friendly no.

I have no problem with gay people why does California have problems with gun owners? That my friends is the magic question.

28. So, feeb, would Davis have signed the ban?
He'ds still be in office except for this Republican fuckwit...

"Sacramento -- Rep. Darrell Issa, within months of leaving Army service in the early 1970s, was arrested twice on illegal-weapons charges, including an incident in Michigan that led to a misdemeanor gun conviction, The Chronicle has learned.
Issa's weapons arrests, when he was an ex-GI and college student, have come under new scrutiny as the millionaire San Diego County Republican attempts to oust Gov. Gray Davis in an unprecedented recall campaign. Issa's $1 million in donations have fueled the recall's momentum.
In a news conference Tuesday, gun control groups attacked Issa as an extremist friend of the National Rifle Association who would threaten assault- weapons laws. They showed a video in which Issa's campaign for U.S. Senate in 1998 operated a booth at a Los Angeles County gun show, where high-powered weapons and Nazi memorabilia were being sold. "

Want to be Ted Nugent, but why can't Democrats be the good guys when it comes to gun control?

I would like to thank everyone for their support. I do not live in Cali so really I could have just ignored it as it's not my problem.

A few months ago people banded together and helped insure that the Assault Weapon ban will not be renewed (13 days to go)almost there. And I thank everyone of them for their efforts and hard work.

The bad thing is people from Cali will not get to enjoy this victory. So the least we can do as gun owners/good citizens is to try and prevent further freedom stealing laws from being forced on law abiding gun owners in California.

After seeing the thread here on the 50 cal ban I did a search and if I'm not mistaken it came from a site pre-ban.com or AWBansunset.com.

While I admit these are not Democrat friendly sites, I still visit them as they have some good pro gun Info (necessary evil).

I was not under the impression that the thread was offending anyone, and if so I would have gladly removed it if asked, but until now it has not been a problem.

I tell you what if you don't want to help the gun owners in California fine thats your right. By all means do what ever make you happy.

I will not turn my back, I will do my part to help my gun owning brothers in California.

Iverglass only the first sentence was for you.

It was not my intention to piss off anyone, it was just to help prevent the 50Cal ban. I should have read it more closely before I posted it.

Tom
