What is this? How could you use it?
Here's your hint: It's part of what has caused a very popular surplus rifle to be banned in CA.

3. Grenade launcher and sight from a Yugoslavian Zastava SKS rifle
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 12:45 PM by slackmaster
http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/zastava.htm

Funny thing is, I have a French MAS 49/56 that had a functionally similar grenade launcher and sight on it when I bought it at a gun store. Thousands were imported and sold in that configuration.

I took the grenade launcher off of mine so I wouldn't have to register it as an "assault weapon" in 2000.

To answer "How could you use it?" - You'd need a grenade. Grenades are highly regulated as destructive devices by both the state and federal governments. So, I guess you could make an adapter to enable it to launch potatoes or golf balls.

4. M 59/66 SKS Grenade launcher and sight
Probably a Yugo, they seem to be the most common ones out there now.

Of course the grenades they are supposed to launch are nowhere around and, from what I've read, were as likely to blow up on the end of the rifle than launch as planned.

Another cosmetic restriction for the feel good crowd.

13. And the item pictured is essentailly a test.
It's a part of the AWB language. It's also part of the reason some firearms are banned in some states and cities. It's also about as harmmless as a firearm component can get.

Sometimes it's kinda nice to prove that many anti's speak with emotion rather than reason.

Why ban, or attempt to ban, something you can't even identify? (rehtorical question for legislators there.)

Thanks for helping me to make my point.

14. Posting threads about guns in the forum
set aside for Crime, Drugs, Death Penalty, Guns, Etc. is hijacking it? That must be something like skirting the Assault Weapons Ban by complying with it.

26. They think they own the forum and make up their own rules.
This has nothing to do with justice, nothing to do with public, and nothing to do with safety. It's gun porn, pure and simple. Those who appreciate gun porn think that those who do not have no business arguing about gun laws, but it's possible that there might be a hole in that logic somewhere.

27. It has everything to do with justice.
People have been prosecuted and/or had their personal property seized for having such things attached to firearms. It doesn't matter that it's useless as tits on a boar. It just looks scary.

From the grabber viewpoint, the elimination of grenade launchers has a great deal to do with public safety. Unlike frearms, grenades truly do have only one purpose - unless they're the tear gas or smoke type. No. I didn't forget flash bangs or incendiaries. Different grenades for different purposes.

Frags are made to kill. That was my thought one the one purpose statement. I figured I'd better cover all the bases "just in case."

32. You can superimpose all that stuff on the thread if you want.
I notice that you don't support any of it, but never mind. The original post showed a picture and asked if anyone could guess what it is. That's got dick to do with justice, public, or safety, no matter what ex post facto justifications you try to paste over it.

Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 03:34 PM by D__S
just to be certain I understood it correctly (how could an easily detachable grenade launcher result in the banning of a bolt action rifle that's been around for some 60+ years ... then I just accepted the fact that it was California).

20. I noticed my unclear wording to late to fix it.
The CA statute specifically bans the Yugo SKS with the grenade launcer attached. Sorry 'bout that.

If you've read the thread, you now know why I posted it.

21. CA law bans grenade launchers in any form
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 03:46 PM by slackmaster
The Department of Justice has expanded the statutory ban on grenade launchers in general to include any device that attaches to a firearm and launches anything resembling a grenade, including the 37 mm launchers that are considered exempt distress signals under federal law.

Because of our abundance of commercial and sporting activity on the water, California allows possession of 37 mm signal flare launchers but not ones that are designed to attach to a firearm.

The Yugo SKSs sans launcher are perfectly legal here.

22. What about exploding 12GA rounds
We used to get calls from the airpark when the Sandhill Cranes were out on the runways. We would fire a round called twin shots. They would go out about 200 yards and explode like the old M80's.

23. 12-gauge bird-scare bombs are legal in CA
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 04:23 PM by slackmaster
But only if you use them to scare birds or varmints.

They are quite effective at getting your neighbors to stop their drunken, screaming fight at 3:00 AM if you live in an unincorporated area.

They're available by mail order.

25. LOL - Wet shrapnel
The Miramar Landfill here in San Diego has a full-time employee whose job is to scare off birds, coyotes, etc. He walks around the dump (which covers about several hundred acres) and fires off 12-gauge bangers all day long.

It looks like it would be fun for the first couple of hours, but I doubt that he makes much money at it.
