Abu Ala: Not So Moderate
http://www.israelnn.com/news.php3?id=49381

Ahmed Qurei, known as Abu Ala, has still not accepted the position of prime minister in the Palestinian Authority. Abu Mazen, who resigned from the position two days ago, has said that he will not serve in a government formed by Abu Ala. Arutz-7's Haggai Huberman reports that Abu Ala presented fairly moderate positions when he served as one of the PA's chief negotiators in the early days of the Oslo process, "but has recently expressed much more extremist positions. He is very demanding of Jerusalem, and has said that both the west and east of the city must be up for negotiations. After Wye, he wrote an article in the PA's Hayat al-Jadida that Israel's borders are the Partition Lines of 1947 - which do not include even Be'er Sheva!"

It was also noted that in a rally in July 1997 in Ramallah, Abu Ala demonstratively trampled - in front of television cameras - atop an Israeli flag. Even the Labor Party protested this act, and threatened to cancel a speech by then-MK Ehud Barak if Abu Ala was even invited to a scheduled left-wing demonstration.

Dr. Aaron Lerner of IMRA ("http://imra.org.il") notes that in December 1997, Abu Ala told him that there would be "no compromise for one centimeter of the West Bank including Jerusalem" - and not even on such integral parts of Jerusalem as French Hill or Ramat Eshkol. "Nothing," Abu Ala said, "not settlements or settlers either. occupied territory from 1967. are welcome to apply for citizenship under Palestinian law."

A year later, Abu Ala told a rally of PA Arabs: "The leadership that threw stones is ready to return and use stones to free the people and the land." (quoted in The New York Times, December 3, 1998) The next day, a Palestinian lynch mob attacked an Israeli vehicle near Ramallah, stoning the car and nearly killing its passengers.

Another Arafat wanna-be. Sounds like a really great guy.:eyes:

Place your bets.....he will not crack down on hamas.

1. I don't see anything wrong with this...

The thing about the 1948 partition is a little more troubling, though. This is clearly a propaganda piece, and I'm wondering if that can be contested by other sources.

2. I see the research department has been busy.
I believe he said the certain parties must "support" him
before he accepts, so I suppose that's what up there.

Sounds like a tough negotiator, better undermine him.

I won't take your bet, I think he won't "crack down on Hamas"
either.

10. You should remember this is a progressive forum...
And if you insist on posting dribble from Arutz Sheva (via Little Green Footballs) and a slew of conservative sources, then why on earth do you think progressives should welcome these sources with open arms? The source is crap, don, and my suggestion is people take the time to read the profile of Abu Ala posted by Jack Rabbit instead of wasting their time on this one...

11. Memo to drdon: Israel willing to work with new Palestinian PM
I just wanted to give you the heads up ahead of the Talking Points:

Israel willing to work with new Palestinian PM

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Sept. 9 — Israel indicated Tuesday it would be willing to work with Ahmed Qureia as the new Palestinian prime minister, despite his close ties with veteran leader Yasser Arafat. Israel initially said after the weekend resignation of Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas that it would not deal with a successor handpicked by Arafat.

15. Jordan times
The Israeli government reiterated its demands for a crackdown on Islamists, adding: "The government of Israel will work only with a Palestinian Authority that is ready to take a strategic decision to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism."

The PA answer was another homicide bombing in Tel Aviv this afternoon.

Shalom y'all

19. The PA
The PA can't do much to control suicide bombing. It controls only a few slivers of territory, and its security forces have been destroyed by Israel.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad are not part of the PLO. They're longtime rivals. In fact, Israel initially encouraged the growth of Hamas in order to create competition for the PLO and foster in-fighting among the Palestinians. The idea that the PA itself sends suicide bombers to attack Israeli civilians is absurd, and not backed up the slighest hint of evidence.

17. and so it goes
the following, cited from Arabic News.com:

"Israel must return every inch of occupied Jerusalem," and "Jerusalem is the key to peace, security and stability in the Middle East," said Palestinian Legislative Council speaker Ahmed Qurei, Abu Ala, who demanded that Israel withdraw completely from the city it occupied in the June 1967 war.
Well, at least he is not a certified Holocaust denier with a PhD...

18. Good
The Palestinians have already made a huge compromise by forsaking 78 percent of their land. Enough of cowards like Abbas. Jerusalem is important to both Jews and Muslims. It should be placed under international administration.

Israelis are not above the law. The law says that taking territory -- any territory, including West Jerusalem -- by force is illegal. It does not say taking territory by force is illegal for everyone except Israel.

Which one is constantly bombing it? Can't be that important to the murderers.

22. there wont be peace in jerusalem until
all sides accept and realize that the west is mainly jewish, the east mainly palestinian, and that all the abrahamic faiths, judaism, christianity and islam have strong ties to the walled old city.
