Gaza gunmen threaten to shut Egypt border crossing

By Reuters and Haaretz Service

Gunmen placed explosives at Gaza's border crossing with Egypt on Wednesday threatening to stop it opening unless Palestinian police released a man suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of three Britons last week.

Witnesses said about 20 gunmen placed the explosives in an attempt to prevent the terminal from opening to daily traffic on schedule at around 0600 GMT.

The Rafah crossing is the first to be policed by the Palestinians, along with European Union monitors and Egyptian security forces. It was opened in November under a U.S.-brokered accord.

A day earlier Palestinian gunmen stormed into a government office in the Gaza Strip to protest the suspect's arrest.
