BREAKING: Explosion at Israeli army base
Explosion at Israeli army base

Three people have been killed and dozens wounded in an explosion near an army base in central Israel, police say.

The blast took place near the Tzrifin Israeli Defence Force base outside Tel Aviv, at a spot where soldiers gather to hitch-hike home on leave.

Police have described it as an attack by Palestinian militants. It is not clear whether it is a suicide attack.

This is the first apparent militant attack inside Israel since Israeli forces at the weekend tried to assassinate the spiritual leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

David Baker, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, said: "The attack today is further indication that the Palestinian Authority is doing absolutely nothing whatsoever to reign in terrorists or to dismantle the terror infrastructure in their areas".

1. Considering that Israel went way out of its way to dismantle the PA
with it's targeted assasinations and bulldozing, how can they logicall say that the PA should have stopped this. It's like blaming the rape victim for being raped.

12. who cares if they didn't
This was a legitamate military operation and they didn't even have any "collateral damage" of the sort that Israel seems powerless to prevent. It's a soldiers job to die and if Israel gets sick of seeing it's sons die over the West Bank and Gaza it's a good thing for everyone.

3. It is a suicide attack, according to Ma'ariv
Also, they think the bomber might have been dressed as an IDF soldier.

6. Plenty of Jews died when Clinton was in office
Largely because he was "the last Zionist", with an idiotic pro-Israel policy, extremely damaging to Israel in the long-run.

9. "There were no jews dying when Clinton was in office"
What an incredibly ignorant statement.

More Israelis were murdered in the five years after the signing of the Oslo Accords than in the preceeding fifteen years. Specifically, between 1993 and 1998, 279 Israelis were killed by Palestinian terrorists, compared to 254 between 1978 and 1993. Until the start of the second intifada (which started under Clinton), this was the worst period of terror in Israeli history.

42. Often
IDF soldiers hitch-hike from the base. However, under the high-level security alert, the instructions have been to avoid this means of transport. The terrorists would not have gotten into the heavily guarded base, but could have been heading for the near-by hospital.

Off-duty soldiers are considered civilians by the HRO.

11. This Seems A Legitimate Military Operation
If the various Arab Palestinian irregular forces would confine their attacks to military personnel, my view of them would be other than it is. Even if there were also civilians killed and injured, an attempt was being made to strike uniformed, serving soldiers.

14. Based on the initial information, I would agree
That sort of view would never be accepted in Israel of course (for understandable reasons).

BTW, the first person Israeli Channel 2 talked to about this was Meir Shitrit, Likud wide-boy extraordinaire.

Three guesses who he blamed (despite the security sources even saying they don't know the identity of the bomber yet):

a) Arafat
b) Arafat
c) Arafat

16. Sir, we must part company here
I wouldn't argue with your assessment if the attack took place within the confines of the IDF building, but it did not. It took place at a crowded "public" bus stop. Would you have seen the recent bombing of the #6 bus in Jerusalem differently were some of the passengers IDF soldiers?

By virtue of the time and place these kids and I mean kids were off duty and going home. It would be comparable if a terrorist blew himself up at a local pizza parlor which is a known location for off duty soldiers to hang out at.

I fail to see where this cowardly act was anything other than a terrorist act for the sole purpose of showing the PM du jour who's boss.

21. That Is Regretted, Mr. Poppy
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 01:51 PM by The Magistrate
It is not possible for me, my friend, to agree an attack on a Hamas member at a crowded intersection is legitimate, despite civilian casualties certain to occure, because he is a combatant, and a state of war exists between the two peoples, and not agree that an attack on soldiers of Israel is legitimate, on the same grounds.

Soldiers are always young, and in war, soldiers are never safe: it is the distinguishing characteristic of war that combatants are liable to be killed at any instant, without any warning, by the enemy. Indeed, it is the business of strategists and tacticians to come as near to an attack without any warning, or possibility of successful resistance, as can be contrived. For all the blather about military honor and the like, the professional ideal is to shoot a man in the back as he blissfully picks his nose.

The judgement of whether a thing is a legitimate act of war is seperate from approval of the cause in which it is done, and is certainly seperate from considerations of sympathy for those who suffer in it, and those near and dear to them.

Maybe Lithos would like to explain why my post was deleted when there was nothing wrong with it?

Magistrate, I agree with yr view on this totally. For someone to complain about the killing of soldiers at a bus-stop, yet claim nothing is wrong with targetting a Hamas member at a crowded intersection despite civilian casualties is displaying double standards...

I'll wait for Lithos to tell me, either here or by PM, because if me pointing out that someone is displaying double standards by approving of Israel attacks in public places yet calling attacks on Israeli troops in a public place terrorism is seen as a personal attack, then I have some real issues with why this same rule isn't being applied to everyone...

37. Killing innocent civilians...
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 10:17 PM by Darranar
the way hamas does hurts the Palestinian cause.

The best argument that Israel's defenders can use is that israel is defending against terrorism. Though you and I know that those arguments are ridiculous 50% of the time, they are believed quite a bit. The Palestinian cause wil be despised and ignored more if the sucide bombings continue, because "Israel's security is at stake."

Additionally, the suicide bombings keep the Likud in power, therefore destroying almost any hope of a peaceful until the Likud party loses power. That is unlikely to happen unless the suicide bombings mostly end.

All this is aside from the horridness of targeting innocent civilians in the way that Hamas does. The slaugther of innocent people is very rarely justified, and in this case it certainly is not.

41. Each Side, Sir
Thinks it inflicts retribution on the other: each points to past killing by the other as justification. Each has good grounds to do so. In almost no case does the "retribution" fall on anyone meaningfully associated with the act for which for which it is sought. Therefore use of the term is mere boiler-plate, and appeal to the concept mendacity. Damned few people in this world get what they deserve, Sir, and that is as true of soldiers as anyone else.

48. Agreed...
with the added note that it works both ways.

If Israel could actually kill a militant and not everyone standing in the area, Israel's plight would be a little more legitimate...not much..but more. Same with Hamas et al, as you said, if they could refrain from the dispicable suicide bombings that not only kill people who have nothing to do with the conflict, their cause would reach an enormous rise in popularity throughout the world. As it is now, it does diminish the cause..they are not being patriotic with this sort of tactic.

40. I pulled it
As always, accusing posters of not not caring about the deaths of people is a personal attack. If you think a double standard has been applied, then, as always, you may register your complaignt with the admins.

45. Uh...
I can't remember the exact wording of what I said, but I'm pretty sure I didn't make any accusation that the person in question didn't care about the deaths of people. I recall saying that they never publicly voice the same level of outrage over the deaths of Palestinian civilians....

Usually if I think there's a problem, I've always just talked it through with Lithos. But seeing yr suggesting talking to the admins, I think I will over this particular issue...

Violet...

I hadn't realized this, I thought it was the actual base with the bus stop as part of it. So the cowards are still cowards.

47. Gabbyspoppy...
so do you condemn Israeli military strikes in crowded Palestinian camps or towns? Let's be consistent. I'm not saying you don't, I just haven't seen it. So for the record could you state your position on that since the above post illustrates your concern for time and position of attacks on military personnel within the vicinity of civilians?

I'm very interested in your answer and I sincerely hope it mirrors your previous post.

45. And what I was pointing out was also
AMERICANS who died. Some of whom died because they wanted a slice of pizza at Sbarro. Some because they wished to study in Israel. I can go on and on.
I have said in threads before that both Israelis and Palestinians bleed in the color of red. I make no distinction in deploring death.
As for the US supplying the bulldozers, I remind you we have also given money to Mr. Arafat. Besides the monies he has extorted from his peoples and placed in his personal bank account, I have to believe he is funding his own private little group of terrorists. So those bombs indirectly say made in the USA also.
So I will join you in deploring the destructive policies that abound as long as you become an equal opportunity deplorer.

The search feature is a marvelous gadget, you might enjoy using it.

I hope your question is answered

20. West Bank is still open
it remains obviously open, there are common trails that are known to the West Bank Palestinians and open fields that Israel is never going to wall across because that would inconvience Israelis.
