3 border policemen indicted on suspicion of beating Palestinian
<snip>

"Three border policeman were indicted last week by the Justice Ministry's Police Investigations Department on suspicion of severely abusing a Palestinian worker in Jerusalem's Old City in December 2005. According to the charge sheet, after apprehending Abed Tareq Ahrub, 19, who was in Jerusalem without a permit, the three policemen - Eliran Levy, Moshe Yekutiel and Almit Asarsa - beat him and forced him to kiss the Border Police insignia on their uniform.

According to the PID, the three policemen, who were on patrol in the Old City, asked Ahrub to produce identification, and on learning that he was in Jerusalem without a permit, they decided to detain him. They then allegedly took him into an alley near the Jewish Quarter and ordered him to stand with his face to the wall with his legs spread. One of the policemen then reportedly held his neck while the other two began to kick and beat him.

The policemen then ordered Ahrub to empty out his bag, and then continued to beat him and curse him. According to the indictment, one of the policemen also instructed Ahrub to lift his shirt, and then proceeded to grab his nipples and squeeze them. After more beatings, the three allegedly ordered him to kiss the Border Police symbol on their uniforms.

The policemen then returned his possession, but refused to give him his birth certificate. Ahrub was treated at a nearby clinic and then filed a complaint with the police."

1. They were probably indicted because....
...they only beat him, and their standing orders were to kill any Arabs they find.

2. It's incidents like this that do Israel the most harm.
Pro-Israeli's may say this type of behavior is rare, a one-off.

But as with the US and Abu Ghraib and the things happening at Guantanamo, these types of things are typically viewed as the tip of the iceberg rather than a rare event. And the corruption is seen as from the top all the way down to the soldiers in the field. After all, they'll do what they know they can get away with.
