Adults in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank blame the United States for recent problems, according to a poll by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion. 30.6 per cent of respondents think the United States is responsible for the deterioration of the economic conditions in the territories of the Palestinian Authority.
Israel is second on the list with 28.4 per cent, followed by Hamas with 24.6 per cent, Fatah with 12.2 per cent, and the European Union (EU) with 3.1 per cent.
Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Fatah faction, won the January 2005 presidential ballot with 62.32 per cent of all cast ballots. In January 2006, Hamas won the Palestinian Legislative Council election, securing 74 of the 112 seats at stake. Haniyeh officially took over as prime minister on Mar. 28. The Israeli government believes Hamas is directly responsible for the deaths of 377 citizens in a variety of attacks, which include dozens of suicide bombings.
