Israel Furious Over Ongoing Palestinian Rocket Fire
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 01:17 PM by bemildred
Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Despite intense Israeli military action, Palestinian rocket fire on towns in southern Israel not only continued, but escalated significantly this week.

On Wednesday morning, an Israeli woman was killed and a member of Defense Minister Amir Peretz's personal bodyguard team was seriously wounded when four rockets fired from Gaza hit the town of Sderot.

Later in the day, the Palestinians launched another barrage against the battered town, seriously wounding a 17-year-old boy and leaving three others suffering from light injuries. The nearby port city of Ashkelon was also bombarded. No injuries were reported there.

---

"Over the last two weeks the number of rockets fired at Israel rose and today they claimed a very heavy price in terms of human life. It is time the State of Israel wakes up and acts in a determined manner to stop these terror attacks from Gaza with all the means it has at its disposal," he said.

1. I believe that Hamas said there would be retaliation for the killing of the family of 18
that Israel described as "a mistake." I still believe that if the weapontry were even, all the killing s and bombings from both sides would stop. Certainly, Israel would stop its incursions into Palestinian territories and stop it's high tech (but inaccurate)bombings of Palestinians.

2. Yes, I believe the Palestinians, or some of them, are furious too.
Not a pretty picture, and not going to get any better soon.

3. Who, exactly, is 'Israel'?

4. Always a good question.
Usually, it means the Israeli government, or something along that line. But it is worth remembering that "Israel", like "The Palestinians" is not a monolithic entity, far from it.

5. Of course it is.
I tend to view palestinians to be more monolithical than israelis are. If this is so, then who is Israel, in this context?

6. I think the Palestinians are less organized than the Israelis.
Though it's hard to see how you would prove it one way or another. But certainly the Israelis have a functioning (more or less) government and unitary military organization, that most of them support, and so on. The Palestinians lack that sort of cohesion. One of the most annoying things about the "Why don't they stop the Kassams" argument is precisely that, there isn't really any "they" there, the Kassams are shot off by various free-lance gangs, who take orders from nobody.

As far as "Who is Israel in this context", I think that any answer you could try to construct would fall apart if you looked at it close. It's a sort of propaganda construct, in this context.

7. The one's who are furious...
Are probably those at whom the rockets are being fired. Just a crazy guess.

8. The wording of that title makes me pause: "furious"
I don't blame them. I'd be upset too if rockets were being fired at me. But if this is how they feel after 1 death in a year, then imagine how the Palestinians must feel with 19 deaths in one week and hundreds in the last few months.
