Precedent-setting ruling: State must recognize gay marriage
In a precedent-setting ruling, the High Court of Justice on Tuesday ruled that five gay couples wedded outside of Israel can be registered as married couples, Army Radio reported.

A sweeping majority of six Justices in favor and one against ruled that the common-law marriages of five gay couples obtained in Toronto, Canada, can appear as married on the population registry.

The gay petitioners sought to force the state to give equal recognition to common law marriages of heterosexual couples to those of gay marriages, which can be performed in certain countries.

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel that filed the petition on the behalf of the couples, argued before the court that the Interior Ministry's refusal to register them as married compromises their right to equality and to hold family life, and is based on "homophobe social perceptions."

2. LOL!
I am sure all religious nuts are going to be freaking, not just in Israel. I am sure the religious nuts here will use this as a "sign" as well. I just hoping nothing big happens in Israel in the next few weeks, or the gays will surely be to blame.

4. We can disagree with them...
...but they ARE rabbis. Some of them, like Ovadiah Yosef, extremely offensive ones, but rabbis nonetheles.

This is interesting because it means that Israel will accept conversions and marriages abroad that would not be permitted if performed within the state.

There's a conflict there that will have to be faced sooner or later.

5. lots of politics involved...
when the religous guys have the interior ministry they dont always accept "out of state" conversions, etc....this conflict has been going on since the state was born: who is a "jew"...is what it comes down to and since there really is no defined answer its up to the state to let all the various factions live within israel while the State must not only have the final say, but must control all its other aspects (funerals, weddings, etc), otherwise the bureaucrats can "muck of the courts decisions."
