Israel: Hit Iran With New Sanctions Now

Israeli officials Thursday night urged "crisper" and "faster" moves to sanction Iran after a UN report found the Islamic Republic had expanded its program to obtain nuclear weapons.

The officials welcomed the Bush administration's stated interest in pressing for expanded sanctions, but expressed mounting concern over the slow pace of international action.

"I don't think we've got endless amounts of time to deal with this problem. The message has to be much crisper and sooner," said a senior Israeli source in Washington. "This is the time that these things have to be dealt with."

Though Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the dispute "has to be decided peacefully with the United States," other top Iranian officials used harsher language, and none showed signs of compromise on halting enrichment and related activities.

"The enemy is making a big mistake if it thinks it can thwart the will of the Iranian nation to achieve the peaceful use of nuclear technology," Iranian state TV's Web site quoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying Wednesday.

I assume you are talking about security council resolutions, where the US has veto power, right?

OK, how exactly does one violate a resolution that was never passed? Do you actually mean that Israel should be critiqued for not adhering to proposed resolutions that were vetoed?

Have you ever violated a never-passed law put before congress? You know, a bill. You actually are allowed to violate bills if you want, don't worry, you won't be punished. The whole reason we have laws and a set process for establishing them is so we can clearly tell people what actions are allowed and what are not. We can go over it in more detail if you are actually confused about how it works.

resolution 242 which is the one that people most often cite for israeli violations is a two way street. it calls for all opposing parties to recognize israels right to exist, which they havent. it also calls for israel to have "safe and defensible borders" which does NOT necessarily mean israel has to withdraw to the 'green line"

Nor am I under the belief that Israel has never been in violation of many UN Security Council resolutions.

I do holdd the belief, however, that we should not sanction anyone because they deviated from proposed resolutions that didn't survive the voting process. I was calling him out on that specific thing because it is so absurd.

Whether it is smart or just to sanction Israel on other, actually legitimate matters is a whole other ball of wax entirely.
