Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Monday that ending the ongoing Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip "is now a priority for the Palestinian National Authority."Abbas told reporters after he met with the Quartet Envoy Toni Blair that "the priority now is to stop all types and kinds of Israeli aggression immediately and without any preconditions."
He also warned of a real humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said in a news conference that President Abbas would head to New York soon to the Security Council "to issue a resolution that ends the Israeli military aggression."
Erekat welcomed the Egyptian efforts "to invite an Islamic Hamas delegation to Cairo to reach a ceasefire, resume the national dialogue and achieve a Palestinian internal reconciliation."
Blair told reporters that the Quartet Committee is holding contacts with all parties "to end the tragic situation in the Gaza Strip," adding that there are three points the Quartet is seeking to achieve.
"First, reaching a ceasefire respected by all parties, finding a way to reunite Gaza with the West Bank and make them one geographical territory and allowing humanitarian aids into Gaza to fight the crisis," Blair told reporters.
