Summit in Egypt seeks long-term Gaza truce
<snip>

"A summit meeting in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday will try to help Egypt turn Israel's unilateral ceasefire in Gaza into a mutual agreement leading to Israeli withdrawal, Egypt said.

The leaders of Britain, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, together with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will meet in the afternoon to coordinate policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after three weeks of fighting.

Israel called off its attacks on Gaza overnight but fighting resumed on Sunday morning, with Hamas firing rockets into Israel and Israeli planes hitting targets in Gaza.

"There are some violations here or there. The aim now is to consolidate that ceasefire so that a ceasefire with a longer duration can be achieved," Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki told the Arabic satellite channel Al Arabiya.

European diplomats also said that their heads of government would offer political support for Egyptian efforts to mediate an agreement between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas.

Hamas, which controls Gaza, has said it will fight on as long as Israeli troops remain in the coastal strip."
