Tel Aviv - Vandals sprayed paint on a Tel Aviv monument commemorating slain prime minister Yitzhak Rabin overnight, less than 48 hours before a rally marking the eighth anniversary of his death.

On a banner carrying a picture of the dovish premier that had been put up for Saturday's rally, the vandals splashed the words "Kahane was right" - in reference to Rabbi Meir Kahane, the late founder of the virulently anti-Arab and anti-peace Kach movement.

Rabin received the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for his central role in the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians and was assassinated a year later by an Israeli ultra-nationalist.

2. The intifada and the Occupation are the only things keeping Israel

from a full-blown civil war between the ultra-religious neo-Zealots and the secular Jews. The level of hatred between these two groups runs very deep, and there is a blood feud that predates the Rabin assassination. In a way one could thank Arafat for keeping Jew-on-Jew violence to a minimum.
