Masked settlers open fire on Palestinians at Nablus area school, six injured |
|
Date: 24 / 04 / 2009 Time: 20:13 Nablus - Ma’an - Masked Israeli settlers shot at and injured at least six Palestinians standing near a school in the village of Urif south of Nablus Friday afternoon.
Following the incident Israeli forces imposed a curfew on the village, and according to Head of the Village Council Fawzi Shehada began firing at Palestinians alongside the settlers.
Palestinian official responsible of the settlement file in the northern West Bank Ghassan Daghlas said the settlers, from Yitzhar, opened fire at the locals from 20 meters away. He called the incident a “clear and dangerous violation of the rights of the Palestinian residents on their lands.”
Shehada said the shooting was intentional and meant to cause injury. He explained that the intensity of the fire prevented him from leaving a home near the school where he was visiting family. “I couldn’t go and see how many wounded there were,” he said.
Palestinian medical sources said five if the six were moved to Rafediya governmental hospital and described their condition as moderate.
The injured were identified as:
Sadam Abed Al-Karim Maher Ghassan Nour Mustafa Safadi Mahmoud Abed Ar-Raheem Safadi I’sam Najeh Safadi Ibrahim Radi Sabah http://maannews.net/en/index.php?opr=ShowDetails&ID=37351

18. Israel's Occupation is 24/7 terrorism on Palestinians |
|
Those settlers are enablers of terrorism and are as unwelcome as the German settlements in Poland at the end of the Great War of 1914-1918.

and they have done in the past. There have been incidents in which pro-settlement radicals have shot at and killed pro-peace Israelis, and I am not just speaking of the Rabin assassination after which many of these scum danced with joy.

Allowing the growth of this population segment might really come back to bite the gov't of Israel in the ass.

15. That will never happen. It will trigger a civil war in Israel, Jew against Jew. |

This is why I believe that a secular bi-national state is the only practical and humane solution remaining. I will support President Obama as he pursues a 2-state solution, simply because it is the only game in town; however, I think that the time for a 2-state solution is long gone from us.

8. And here's the reason why. |

SLIDESHOW: Israel & Region | World Yitzhar's rapid-response team was alerted after the shooting, and the alleged attackers were seen running in the direction of the nearby Palestinian village of Orif.
Residents exited the village to confront the settlers, which led to the clashes. Six Palestinians were also injured.
IDF troops arrived on the scene and used riot gear to disperse the Palestinians.
RELATED Students show support for troops in face of protesters Also Friday, a Palestinian activist protesting the construction of the security barrier near the West Bank village of Nil'in was seriously wounded by a tear gas canister, according to Palestinian sources. A number of other protesters were also said to have been hit by canisters.
The IDF said that tear gas was fired after protesters threw rocks at security forces.
Last week, a resident of the village of Bil'in was killed during a similar demonstration.
Approximately 1,000 demonstrators, including Israeli and foreign activists, took part in the protest, as did some 50 youths from the 'Im Tirtzu' student organization, who arrived to show support to the security forces.
The group was accompanied by MK Otniel Schneller (Kadima) and Mendy Safdie, spokesman for Deputy Minister for the Development of the Negev and Galilee Ayoub Kara.
Schneller explained that he had come to protest against anarchists and the radical Left, insisting that "an indictment must be filed and that the phenomenon must be seriously addressed."
The protesters who arrive at Nil'in every Friday to demonstrate against the barrier's construction stray from the village checkpoint, entering a closed military zone.
According to Safdie, the deputy minister had already written to Interior Minister Eli Yishai, asking him to act against the demonstrators. The same request was also made to Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharanovitch.
Amit Barak, assistant director general of Im Tirtzu, told The Jerusalem Post that the organization was calling on Knesset members and the government to act with decisiveness against the protesters.
"The time has come to issue restraining orders and impose administrative detention. Every now and then we hear of being taken against right-wing activists. Therefore, there is nothing to prevent from acting against the anarchists that return on a weekly basis to misbehave and harm the security forces," Barak said.
"In addition, we call on Eli Yishai, the new interior minister, to begin dealing with the same foreign anarchists that create provocations, incite and physically harm soldiers and border guards in Judea and Samaria. They should be arrested, expelled from the country and prevented from returning again," Barak told the Post.
Im Tirtzu aims to strengthen Zionist ideals on Israeli university campuses.

More of the same: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3706178,00.htmlFive Yitzhar settlers were lightly injured Friday evening in a clash with Palestinians from the nearby West Bank village of Ourif.
Israel Defense Forces entered the village for a search and used crowd dispersal means against the Palestinians, who reported of 14 residents who were hospitalized and 15 Palestinians hurt by tear gas who were treated on site.
One of the wounded settlers was evacuated to a hospital. The IDF is looking into the report that Palestinians were also injured in the incident.
After the IDF searched the village, the Palestinians claimed that soldiers deployed in the area, but the army said the forces had left the village.

19. And yet this kind of tit-for-tat violence has |
|
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 04:01 PM by Igel
been going on for far longer than 40 years.
Hence the problem: When you start keeping score from a convenient point, you pretty much get the answer you want. Start keeping score from the late 1890s, and you have a problem: There were settlers, but they were much better behaved, by and large.
My point: If you start keeping track in 1967, or even 1940, you can explain the Palestinians' behavior as a response to Jewish extremism. You could explain the Jews' behavior as a reaction to Palestinian extremism, but then you have the settlers being the invaders and aggressors, and so bear additional guilt. If you start in 1920, then you lose that explanation as a possibility--instead you suddenly find that the Palestinians' behavior has been unaltered in 100 years, and the "Zionists'" behavior has changed. It's suddenly harder to explain the Palestinians' behavior as a response to Jewish violence, and having the Jewish behavior essentially a response, a reaction, to Palestinian xenophobia and the easily hurt "feelings of the Muslims" is much more plausible.
Does this justify the present day settlers? Of course not. They've learned some very bad lessons, and both sides have improved upon their behavior nastiness, becoming even nastier. However, it certainly plops the Palestinians firmly back onto the hook.
