EU distances itself from own poll
that finds majority of Europeans list Israel, United States as threats to world peace

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Nov. 3 — The European Union Monday condemned lingering anti-Jewish bias it said was reflected in a new survey, which found that many Europeans see Israel as a threat to world peace.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, whose country holds the EU presidency, called Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to express his ''surprise and indignation'' over the survey results, saying the question had been ''misleading.''

The results ''point to the continued existence of a bias that must be condemned out of hand,'' European Commission President Romano Prodi said in a statement. ''To the extent that this may indicate a deeper, more general prejudice against the Jewish world, our repugnance is even more radical.''

2. The quote is
"...whose country holds the EU presidency...", but if MSNBC is wrong about the country, then that's on MSNBC.

Prodi is president of the European Commission, which paid for this poll. (Prodi led the first leftist government in Italy since World War II.)

Berlusconi is the current president of the European Union, a position that rotates among the heads of the EU states.

But those who slam Berlusconi here are right. Two months ago this neo-fascist media mogul slimeball said Mussolini never killed anyone; he just sent Italian Jews "on vacation into internal exile." :puke:

9. Fini
I am not surprised by that, our neighbour has as Vice President of the Council of Ministers - Gianfranco Fini, an outright fascist and admirer of Mussolini (whose party is a successor or Mussolinis party)

4. Yes he is a Musolini fan
. Many of the neocons think Musolinni was good for Italy until he allied with Adolf. Go figure.

5. Is Berlusconi a Christian fundamentalist?
Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 10:44 PM by Darranar
They're known for being both anti-semitic and radically pro-Israel...

7. Well, live and learn
I sincerely thank you all for setting forth the facts here.

My idea was this was some sort of face-saving expedient deal, but instead it's riddled with fascists - OMIGOD.

10. In my opinion
the EU was caught with its pants down and tried to make it right. Too little to late.

then Bush and Musolini supporter Brulasconi. Why would they express embarrassment over their own voters? There is no political advantage in doing such a thing, and nobody would think it antisemitic but some weirdos. Ofcoarse Brulosconi will likely lose the election over the support of the war so it isn't going to pay off for him, that's for sure.

11. I don't know if Berlusconi is a fundamentalist
But if he is, it's not the standard Protestant type you'd encounter in the US. I'm sure he's Catholic, so he would be in the Mel Gibson anti-Vatican II strain of fundamentalist.

maybe the Bill Bennet variety.
