Archbishop Tutu tells Ma'an: World must engage Hamas |
|
Israel and other parties have no choice but to talk to Hamas, South African Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said in an exclusive interview on Wednesday.
"You don't make peace with friends," he told Ma'an in Ramallah. "You negotiate with those who are regarded as pariahs."
<snip>
The archbishop drew parallels between Israel's Hamas boycott and white South Africa's refusal to engage Mandela's anti-apartheid African National Congress (ANC) which, like Hamas today, was once labeled a terrorist organization by much of the international community.
"It's the same thing that happened in South Africa for a very long time," he said. "The apartheid government said they wouldn't negotiate with Nelson Mandela, and so on - and they had to."http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=221937

2. Everyone should be involved in negotiations - if they wish to |
|
Thus the world, including Israel, should be willing to talk to Hamas. But the bigger question there is - will Hamas be willing to talk to the world? Especially if Israel is included even indirectly. So far, Hamas don't even have a very good record for being willing to negotiate with other Palestinian groups, so I'm dubious. We shall see.

5. Do you also think that all involved in the Northern Ireland talks 'heart murdering terrorists' |
|
There were certainly murdering terrorists there - on both sides.
It isn't 'loving terrorists' to want all sides included in peace talks. It may at times be a fool's errand; as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. If Hamas don't want to bother getting involved in any peace talks, however indirectly, they cannot be forced to.

6. That's a really ignorant thing to say... |
|
..as well as sounding very much like something conservatives who adored Bushco's policy of not engaging in talking with those they opposed would say. Knee-jerking like that doesn't leave much time for reading the article and coming up with something intelligent to say about it, but you should give it a try. Do you seriously think that DUers here who agree that Hamas should be invited to talk are all terrorist apologists?
