Nov. 9, 2003 : Arafat wins control of PA security forces

After weeks of wrangling, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat and PA Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei on Saturday reached a deal giving Arafat exclusive control over all PA security forces and paving the way for the formation of a broad-based cabinet.

Qurei backtracked from his earlier demand to appoint Gen. Nasser Youssef as interior minister and agreed to place control over the security forces under the National Security Council, which is headed by Arafat. Over the past few weeks, Qurei threatened to quit more than once after Arafat balked at his decision to appoint Youssef.

Meanwhile, Arafat's retention of his hold on the PA security forces has not lessened Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's willingness to meet with Qurei, senior government sources said Saturday night.

1. Arafat wins nothing!
When will the people understand he is not helping the situation?

3. As long as the thieving weasel
retains any power there can be no peace, just another round of
brazen lies and hypocracy.

5. That's not true...
if the Prime minister manages to get enough popular support to ignore Arafat, Arafat will still have some power but won't be able to cripple the peace process. The only way for that to occur is with Israeli concessions.

23. Unfortunately, My Friend
Who controls the guns controls the process. This is particularly true in situations lacking institutional inertia. So long as the armed groups answer to Arafat, no one else matters more than a kitten's mewl.

24. I disagree...
Arafat would not attack Israel directly - that would be foolish to an extreme - and that is really the only thing that would harm the peace process that could immediately be done by Arafat. Once the prime minister gained enough power, the circumstances of control could well change...

But all of this is really unimportant - unless Sharon acts for peace (which he won't) this won't go anywhere anyway.

4. The headline is not technically accurate...
the power is in the hands of the National Security Council, and Qurei is a member.

I don't see at all how this is as bad as Kristallnacht. It just means that nothing will change - if that wasn't clear already. Sicne Qurei is already doomed b Sharon and Arafat, this si but a flea.

12. Kristallnacht:
A massive, coordinated attack on Jews throughout the German Reich on the night of November 9, 1938, into the next day, has come to be known as Kristallnacht or The Night of Broken Glass.

On November 9, mob violence broke out as the regular German police stood by and crowds of spectators watched. Nazi storm troopers along with members of the SS and Hitler Youth beat and murdered Jews, broke into and wrecked Jewish homes, and brutalized Jewish women and children.

All over Germany, Austria and other Nazi controlled areas, Jewish shops and department stores had their windows smashed and contents destroyed. Synagogues were especially targeted for vandalism, including desecration of sacred Torah scrolls. Hundreds of synagogues were systematically burned while local fire departments stood by or simply prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings.

Heydrich requested new decrees barring Jews from any contact with Germans by excluding them from public transportation, schools, even hospitals, essentially forcing them into ghettos or out of the country. Goebbels said the Jews would be made to clean out the debris from burned out synagogues which would then be turned into parking lots.

16. But, bluesoul, for some of us,
to coin a phrase, the past really was prologue and the voids in our families tend to spring to the forefront of our brains most painfully on such an anniversary. I hope you can empathize...
