IDF Forces Met with Pre-Planned Violence when Attempting to Board Flotilla, 31 May 2010
IDF Forces Met with Pre-Planned Violence when Attempting to Board Flotilla, 31 May 2010

Early this morning, IDF Naval Forces boarded six ships attempting to break the maritime closure of the Gaza Strip. This happened after numerous warnings from Israel and the Israeli Navy that were issued prior to the action. The Israel Navy requested the ships to redirect toward Ashdod where they would be able to unload their aid supplies which would then be transferred over land after undergoing security inspections.

During the boarding of the ships, the demonstrators onboard attacked the IDF Naval personnel with live fire and light weaponry including knives and clubs. Additionally one of the weapons used was grabbed from an IDF soldier. The demonstrators had clearly prepared their weapons in advance for this specific purpose.

As a result of this life-threatening and violent activity, naval forces employed riot dispersal means, including live fire.

According to initial reports, these events resulted in over ten deaths among the demonstrators and numerous injured, in addition, more than four naval personnel were injured, some from gunfire and some from various other weapons. Two of the soldiers are moderately wounded and the remainder sustained light injuries. All of the injured, Israelis and foreigners are currently being evacuated by helicopter to hospitals in Israel.

Reports from IDF forces on the scene are that it seems as if part of the participants onboard the ships were planning to lynch the forces.

Looks pre-planned.

Turkey and the FGM should be held responsible, right? They sent people with known terror ties (IHH) on a mission to engage the IDF and therefore endangered the rest of the crew in doing so.

No fucking way.

And we're all to believe that suddenly after these bullets were fired - of which there's conveniently zero footage - that dozens of "peace activists and humanitarians" just found some metal pipes and knives and started to go to town on commandos boarding the boat, who for some odd reason weren't firing on their way down to the lynch mob?

Two were down before the ship was even boarded (on edit: possibly not true). The IDF was firing tear gas, along with real bullets, even when white flags were being flown.

Yes, as soon as the IDF started firing bullets, the protesters should have ran inside. However, the IDF provoked the incident by firing needlessly on civilians that had not yet attacked them.

(This is forgetting the fact that the boarding of the ship in the first place was an uncalled for, unprovoked, blatently illegal act of aggression.)

Edit: Possible video. Al-Jazeera (?) reporters on the ship.

Perhaps you are correct. Hopefully a neutral party will do an investigation on these claims that are flying back and forth.

I am willing to admit that the actions of both sides are extremely fishy. I stand by the fact that IDF deserves the blame for this incident. However, I seemed to have fallen into the trap of reading biased crap and taking it for fact. It happens. :)

81. It also explains why they attempted to board at 4.30AM
And use a covert commando group.

4.30AM - in the dark, for the element of surprise and to keep those journalists on board from reporting what actually went down.....that was from an Israeli spokesperson.

Now - this begs another question....if the operation was lawful - why would there be the need to keep what actually happened from being reported to the world?

I think the flotilla had a specific purpose - and Israel provided exactly what the organizers were intending....This horrific action has shed light on the Gaza blockade, and Israel's actions. As usual, Israel sympathizers blame Hamas...Hamas did not kill those activists. And what of the evil cargo that had to be taken....toys, wheel chairs, medical supplies, food....nothing of which is not available to the people of Gaza....and then the spokesperson claims that this is proof that it was not a humanitarian mission....huh?

There is only one thing Israel can do to clean up this muck up. Apologise. Make reparations.

11. Facts don't matter to the Israel hate brigade
Here are some of the "humanitarian peace" activists chanting death to the Jews (invoking Khaibar, the last Jewish town destroyed in 7th century Arabia) just a few days prior...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3L7OV414Kk&feature=player_embedded

Notice the lady at the end saying she'll either be a martyr or make it into Gaza.

Israel had every right to board a ship that hosted IHH terror members (recognized as such by the USA, with both Hamas and al-Qaida ties). If anything, Turkey and the FGM should be held accountable provoking this incident and putting innocent lives of other civilians on the boats in danger.

16. San Remo Law says they are totally entitled to board
The San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, 12 June 1994: states:

SECTION V : NEUTRAL MERCHANT VESSELS AND CIVIL AIRCRAFT

Neutral merchant vessels

67. Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they:

(a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture;
(b) engage in belligerent acts on behalf of the enemy;
(c) act as auxiliaries to the enemy s armed forces;
(d) are incorporated into or assist the enemy s intelligence system;
(e) sail under convoy of enemy warships or military aircraft; or
(f) otherwise make an effective contribution to the enemy s military action, e.g., by carrying military materials, and it is not feasible for the attacking forces to first place passengers and crew in a place of safety. Unless circumstances do not permit, they are to be given a warning, so that they can re-route, off-load, or take other precautions.

Bottom line: Israel had every right to interdict and apprehend the flotilla. This was a textbook example of the application of these principles of international law.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3L7OV414Kk&feature=player_embedded

FGM could have refused to board with these nasty fucks.

Turkey could have warned Israel of what to expect.

Seems Israel bought into the peace and humanitarian mission that everyone was peddling. Had they known what was really up, this could have all been avoided.

And there is no starving Gazan population.

Neither was this a humanitarian mission, as Great Berlin admitted (it was to break the siege).

You could have used other maritime blockades as parallels. I'm pretty certain you would never mention the Exodus in explaining the Turkey/Azerbaijan blockade of Armenia 20 years ago.

Edited on Tue Jun-01-10 07:25 PM by shaayecanaan
It was not a merchant vessel, therefore that provision does not apply. It was a humanitarian vessel.

Even humanitarian vessels sailing under an enemy flag are exempt from attack:-

47. The following classes of enemy vessels are exempt from attack:

(a) hospital ships;
(b) small craft used for coastal rescue operations and other medical transports;
(c) vessels granted safe conduct by agreement between the belligerent parties including:
(i) cartel vessels, e.g., vessels designated for and engaged in the transport of prisoners of war;
(ii) vessels engaged in humanitarian missions, including vessels carrying supplies indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, and vessels engaged in relief actions and rescue operations;

Even in the case of merchant vessels, certain goods are prohibited from capture:-

149. In order to exercise the right of capture referred to in paragraphs 146(a) and 147, the belligerent must have published contraband lists. (NB: ISRAEL HAS NOT) The precise nature of a belligerent's contraband list may vary according to the particular circumstances of the armed conflict. Contraband lists shall be reasonably specific.

150. Goods not on the belligerent's contraband list are 'free goods', that is, not subject to capture. As a minimum, 'free goods' shall include the following:

(a) religious objects;
(b) articles intended exclusively for the treatment of the wounded and sick and for the prevention of disease;
(c) clothing, bedding, essential foodstuffs, and means of shelter for the civilian population in general, and women and children in particular, provided there is not serious reason to believe that such goods will be diverted to other purpose, or that a definite military advantage would accrue to the enemy by their substitution for enemy goods that would thereby become available for military purposes;
(d) items destined for prisoners of war, including individual parcels and collective relief shipments containing food, clothing, educational, cultural, and recreational articles;
(e) goods otherwise specifically exempted from capture by international treaty or by special arrangement between belligerents; and
(f) other goods not susceptible for use in armed conflict

157. according to international law
and your interpretation of it, Israel did indeed have a right to board it.

According to international law, in a time of war, if a country is blockaded, the country doing the blockading has a right to board any vessels attempting to run the blockade.

for all intents and purposes Israel and Hamas (whom are the government of Gaza) are at war.

Treasury Designates the Union of Good

Washington, DC-The U.S. Department of the Treasury today designated the Union of Good, an organization created by Hamas leadership to transfer funds to the terrorist organization.

"Terrorist groups such as Hamas continue to exploit charities to radicalize vulnerable communities and cultivate support for their violent activities," said Stuart Levey, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. "The U.S. Government will continue to expose and undermine the activities of charities working on behalf of Hamas and other terrorist groups. At the same time, we are working with the charitable sector to expand the range of legitimate alternatives for providing charitable assistance to the Palestinian people."

Union of Good was designated today under Executive Order 13224, which targets terrorists, terrorist organizations, and those providing financial, technological, or material support to terrorists, terrorist organizations, or acts of terrorism. Any assets the Union of Good holds under U.S. jurisdiction are frozen and U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in any transactions with the Union of Good.

The leadership of Hamas created the Union of Good in late-2000, shortly after the start of the second Intifada, in order to facilitate the transfer of funds to Hamas. The Union of Good acts as a broker for Hamas by facilitating financial transfers between a web of charitable organizations--including several organizations previously designated under E.O. 13224 for providing support to Hamas--and Hamas-controlled organizations in the West Bank and Gaza. The primary purpose of this activity is to strengthen Hamas' political and military position in the West Bank and Gaza, including by: (i) diverting charitable donations to support Hamas members and the families of terrorist operatives; and (ii) dispensing social welfare and other charitable services on behalf of Hamas.

Among the primary financiers of Union of Good projects are several organizations designated pursuant to E.O. 13224 for providing support to Hamas and other terrorist groups, including the International Palestine Relief and Development Fund (Interpal), Al- Aqsa Foundation, Comite de Bienfaisance et de Secours aux Palestiniens (CBSP), the Association de Secours Palestiniens (ASP) of Switzerland, the Palestinian Association in Austria (PVOE), and the Sanabil Association for Relief and Development in Lebanon. The Union of Good facilitates the transfer of tens of millions of dollars a year to Hamas- managed associations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Funds raised by the Union of Good affiliates have been transferred to Hamas-managed organizations in the West Bank and Gaza. In addition to providing cover for Hamas financial transfers, some of the funds transferred by the Union of Good have compensated Hamas terrorists by providing payments to the families of suicide bombers. One of them, the Al-Salah Society, previously identified as a key support node for Hamas, was designated in August 2007 under E.O. 13224. The Society employed a number of members of the Hamas military wing and supported Hamas-affiliated combatants during the first Intifada.

The Union of Good's executive leadership and board of directors includes Hamas leaders, Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs), and other terrorist supporters. The secretary general of the Union of Good, for example, also acts as the vice-chairman of the United Kingdom-based Interpal, which was designated in 2003 for providing financial support to Hamas under the cover of charitable activity. As of mid-2007, this official served on the Hamas executive committee under Hamas leader Khaled Misha'al.

Board members of the Union of Good include a West Bank Hamas member, and Abd alMajid al-Zindani, a Yemen-based Hamas fundraiser who was designated pursuant to E.O. 13224 in 2004 for providing support to al-Qaida. In 2006, Zindani delivered a fundraising speech at a Hamas conference in Yemen where the crowd pledged millions of riyals for Hamas.

The United States is also actively working with the Arab-American community and other interested donors to provide alternate relief mechanisms to the Palestinian people as we take action against the HAMAS charitable infrastructure.

129. Here is once again your Treasury letter

That you'd excuse the complete filth within the video of post #11 says more of you than anything else.

Turkey deliberately sent known terrorists determined to engage the IDF and therefore put actual humanitarians in harm's way.

There's simply no excuse for you trying to divert attention from that.

35. "Israeli commandos approached the ship, they were laying down suppressive fire (video)
Raw video posted to Youtube from the initial phase of the Israeli boarding of the Turkish vessel, Mavi Marmara demonstrates that as the Israeli commandos approached the ship, they were laying down suppressive fire and at that point killed two individuals aboard the ship. Even after the ship ran up a white flag, the Israelis continued to use live ammunition along with stun grenades and tear gas.

See Stephen C. Webster’s analysis of this video of the boarding:

If the crew and passengers of the Mavi Marmara were coming under fire and had taken casualties in the initial phase of the Israeli approach, that horror would help explain why some actively resisted the boarding and that in turn would explain the contextless snippet of video released by the Israeli army of Israeli commandos being fought as they commandeered the vessel. If the passengers thought the Israeli military had murderous intentions toward them, some would obviously attempt to forestall the boarding. It is also possible that there were no deaths on the other ships because they were boarded later and after the Israeli helicopter gunship crews had learned that suppressive fire during the initial approach was unnecessary and counterproductive, and so they ceased that tactic.

I only saw kitchen knifes and a few pieces of wood.

If there were verified pictures of guns, or RPGs, that would of course change things. How is a kitchen knife a weapon of war? As for the blockade, any country can't just blockade any area they want. That doesn't make any sense. What if the US started boarding random ships at sea for no reason?

131. Definitely not knives you use to eat with but...
Most look exactly like knives you prepare food with - chopping vegetables, slicing meats, etc. When taking a ocean trip, you don't want to store a lot of prepackaged food, as that tends to be less healthy and take up a lot more space than fresh vegetables, frozen meats, etc.

143. May be a kirpan - a Sikh ceremonial dagger
Edited on Wed Jun-02-10 12:15 AM by HappyCynic
It's possible it's a kirpan, a ceremonial dagger worn by some Sikhs. Without info on who the owner is/was it's hard to know for sure. Its shape is more suggestive of a ceremonial weapon than one actually meant for combat. And, if that's the only "major" weapon of the lot, that's a really poor "arsenal".
More info on the kirpan:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirpan
From the wiki page:
The Kirpan (English pronunciation: /kɪərˈpɑːn/; Punjabi: ਕਿਰਪਾਨ kirpān) is a sword or dagger carried by many Sikhs. According to a mandatory religious commandment given by Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth Guru of Sikhism) at the Baisakhi Amrit Sanchar (a holy religious ceremony that formally baptizes a Sikh) in AD 1699, all baptised Sikhs (Khalsa) must wear a kirpan at all times.

Edited to add:
Also from the wiki page:
To the Sikhs, it is a highly important religious symbol; it is rarely used as a weapon.

Edited again to add:
The Scottish also have a ceremonial dagger: the sgian dubh, a knife originally for skinning animals but is now mostly ceremonial.

I really doubt it's weapon, Shira. I was at a restaurant supply store last Thursday looking for a chopping block and they had all sorts of knives that look pretty mean with wicked curves and stuff, but they are for specialized jobs. They're not intended as weapons.

Shira, this is really stretching it. These are not weapons you would expect to challenge well-armed soldiers with.

One thing that has become utterly apparent since the hijacking and murder of the peace activist is that the benefit of the doubt I have been giving some other posters here has been completely misplaced. No one who justifies this action by the IDF is a reasonable person much less a moderate...that is ridiculous and simply batshit crazy.

Once I heard someone attempt to support a terrorist attack on the Jordan border against some Israeli children. I told the person that I have no respect for those who support intentionally targeting innocent children...the same goes for those for those who support this act of piracy and murder in international waters - I simply cannot respect their opinions. They are psychologically incapable of intellectual honesty.

159. When will you condemn the IDF for a botched "enforcement"
Here is the thing to think about. The IDF had choices. They could of chosen to enforce the blockade in the light of day - with all the camera's running to show their level headed response - but they didn't. They could of stated openly that the vessel would be inspected for weapons before being allowed to continue - but they didn't. Openly - transparently with some 60 odd journalists all recording their actions to verify. But they didn't.

They were firing before attempting to board in the middle of the night. They assumed riot control measures even before engaging with tear gas and concussion grenades. And because of this - you have the gall to blame Turkey?

Israel has lost ALLOT on this one. It could of been done so much better for all - and Israel would of gained so much by openly and transparently inspecting the flotilla and then once given the all clear - escorted them right to Gaza to be unloaded. That is what a respectable nation does. It would show empathy, and at the same time show level headed concerns regarding security. It would show flexibility and strength. Hamas would of gained nothing. Now Hamas gains sympathy and the world is rightly outraged. Shame on you. Shame on Israel for falling into this trap.

THINK before kneejerk reactions. That goes for both sides. Israel can and should do much better - I am only one person, but yes, I expect more from them.

Hard to tell, but whichever they are may we be eternally grateful that the blockade of Gaza is keeping such illicit contraband out of the hands of terrorists.

The grinders don't appear to be cordless. It must have been rather difficult to use them particularly given that the boat probably only had 12volt power on board.
