U.S. to support proposal seeking UN support of road map
Some interesting bits if you read between the lines, too.
It sounds like Jabbba is coming under increasing pressure, and
I would wager this is connected to the debacle in Iraq.

The U.S. administration informed Israel on Sunday
that it plans to support the Russian resolution
seeking United Nations Security Council
endorsement of the road map peace initiative.

--

Putin promised Sharon that Russia would not take
action contradictory to Israel's position. But,
after the meeting, Russia's ambassador to the
UN clarified that he had not been given new
instructions from Moscow, and he would continue
advancing the resolution.

---

The prime minister also said that he would soon
hold a debate on the illegal outposts, and
would issue a detailed report on their numbers.
Paritzky said last week that he would raise the
issue in the cabinet meeting, following a
report by Haaretz that government ministries
were funding the construction of illegal
outposts, despite guidelines to the contrary
issued by Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein.

---

Sharon's comments follow reports that U.S.
officials have in recent days sent sharp
messages to Israel, criticizing its activities
on settlements in the territories, and the
separation fence.

1. I read between the lines...

and realized that this was yet more talk and no action.

On edit: I'm not very surprised.

It does seem that Bush is pressuring Sharon a bit, though, with talk - as usual, Sharon caves in, with talk.

I'd guess it is the coming election (after all, he needs all the time he can get) more then the Iraq debacle that's inciting this.

3. I rather thought the UN resolution mattered.
According to this, Jabba went all the way to Moscow
to try to stop it, and all he got was a little shuck and
jive for it.

The White House has every reason to be tense about it.
They just lack the intestinal fortitude (so far) to do much.
They are still clinging to the delusion that they can get, and
will need, the Jewish vote next year; and that this will get it
for them. But the mess in Iraq is getting damaging enough that
they are starting to squirm a bit, and the more Jabba insists on
jabbing sticks at the Arabs in order to prove that he was right
all along, the more he stokes the fire in Iraq.
