Israel signals shift over settlements produce

Israel is considering mark-ing products exported to the European Union with their point of origin following a long-standing dispute with Brussels, which says goods produced in Jewish settlements in the occupied territories are not eligible for preferential tariffs.
Israeli officials said Ehud Olmert, minister of industry and trade, announced the proposal during talks in Brussels yesterday. He said such moves would not affect Israel's diplomatic position on the territories.
Mr Olmert's proposal points to a marked shift in policy in the rules-of-origin dispute.
Silvan Shalom, Israeli foreign minister, this month accused the EU of prejudging the outcome of any final status peace talks because it was talking about goods originating from settlements that would be part of those negotiations.......
