Mussolini's granddaughter leaves right-wing party
ROME - Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of the
late Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, quit her
right-wing party Thursday to protest the party
leader's denunciations this week in Israel of
Italy's Fascist past.

During the high-profile visit to Israel, Deputy
Premier Gianfranco Fini, leader of
the National Alliance party which has a neo-fascist
past, condemned "the shameful chapters in the history
of our people" and denounced as "disgraceful" the
anti-Jewish laws promulgated in 1938 under Mussolini.

"I quit the party because there have been
incompatibilities not so much with my policies
but rather with the surname I carry,"
Mussolini, who is a member of the Chamber of
Deputies, said in announcing her decision,
according to Italian news reports.

Mussolini said she would remain in Parliament as
an independent.

So there is a falling out in the party ranks. Apparently Moussolini is anti-Semitic but not anti-Israel. A rare breed.

1. A rare breed?
I thought anti-Semitics were anti-Zionist and anti-Israel. That's what Sharon says.

2. Apparently
Alessandra Moussolini is different. She encourages the world to apologize to Israel, yet will not apologize for her Grandfather's anti-Semitic legislation.

4. I think you're very naive, Gimel

Members of Europe's neo-fascist right have often said similar things: "The whole world should apologize to Israel/the Jews."

This is a rhetorical ploy to avoid taking direct responsibility for acts which "the whole world" did not commit. It's a way of saying, "Why should we be the only ones to apologize? The whole world should do the same." As if the "whole world" were responsible for the Shoah. You know that is not the case.

I think this is the only reading of Mussolini's statments that makes any sense. Otherwise there is no explanation for the logically incoherent fact that "she encourages the world to apologize to Israel, yet will not apologize for her Grandfather's anti-Semitic legislation."

In sum, Mussolini is just as anti-Semitic (and anti-Israel) as she ever was. I'm sure if we wait long enough she'll show her true colors. These scum always do.

6. You are right
They should be apologizing, not "the whole world".

Of course the US military (including my own dad) fought Hitler, Mossolini in WWII.

No way am I defending this axis of evil nor am I a Mussolini admirer. Posting a news item doesn't make me one either.

7. True colors
It seems that her loyalty to her name- and her grandfather are it. Anti-Semitic, as I noted is usually also anti-Israel.

This contradiction that she displayed makes her a "rare Breed" as I noted. She may be just "jumping on the band wagon" at this point, as many nations have apologized to Israel and the Jewish people for the holocaust. Direct complicity and indirect complicity by virtue of silence and inaction in the face of the fascist regimes.

Most of the allied response came much too late, and was motivated by other reasons than saving Jewish lives.

I'm not naive enough to believe that all the people of the nations who have aplogized are in fact not anti-semitic.

Thanks for your note, however.
