Israel urges West: Make sure new Egypt regime honors peace deal

Prime Minister wants international community to make clear that new leadership must meet a series of conditions similar to those posed by Hamas in order to gain recognition of legitimacy.

By Barak Ravid

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked U.S. President Barack Obama and a number of other Western leaders in recent days to make it clear to any new Egyptian regime that it must abide fully by the peace agreement with Israel.

Senior Israeli officials said that Netanyahu would like the international community to make it clear to any new Egyptian leadership that will emerge that it must meet a series of conditions in return for receiving legitimacy in the eyes of the West - similar to those posed to Hamas following the Islamist movement's victory in Palestinian elections. The Mideast Quartet had demanded, and still requires, that in return for recognition, Hamas relinquish terrorism, recognize Israel and accept as binding previous negotiated agreements between the Palestine Liberation Organization and Israel.

Although Netanyahu is not drawing a comparison between Hamas rule and a new Egyptian government, he would like to see, along with demands for democracy and respect for human rights, that the international community set as a condition that any new government in Cairo abide by the international agreements to which the Mubarak regime had signed, according to officials.

"The matter was made clear to the Americans and many other countries," a senior official in Jerusalem said. "We are not opposed to democracy in Egypt but it is important for us to preserve the peace agreement."

Some people want those who are trying to keep the peace to "KINDLY SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!", but fortunately that's not going to happen, regardless of how they're misrepresented and vilified.

1. But....I thought the pro-peace Israel bashers would want the peace treaty kept b/w Egypt/Israel.

2. well, I would never say "kindly"...more like "promptly", but that's beside the point

referring to what the pet pharaoh kept as "peace" is an unfortunate euphemism; but really, nothing better can be expected from those who indeed would describe it as such--mutilation of language for the business of deception is just part of hasbara business as usual. Sorry (not really) to hear about your house of cards being shaken apart at the moment, I can imagine how frustrating it must be to realize just how tenuous the grip on current events is.

4. So you were opposed to Israel signing a peace treaty with Egypt?
Are you opposed to the peace treaty with Jordan as well?

Is Jordan ruled by another Israeli "pet pharaoh" in your opinion?

If so, what should Israel do with respect to its relations with that country?

6. opposed to Jordan & Egypt making treaties with Israel, yes
Flips it around a bit, but the direction that statement flows is in fact important.

"pharaoh" is a bit of a Egypt-centric phrase, given its history, and is actually not altogether appropriate now that I think about it--Pharaoh was held as a god, reluctantly-among men; behind the scenes maybe a slave to the priestly class, but as a facade he was a powerful man without equal in the known world.... Mubarak is just a petty bloody stooge who takes his cues from the very people he should still be aiming his jets against (former Air Force fighter in the lousy failed performances in '67 and '73 against the usurping entity).

Regardless of the preferred epitaph, the Playstation King is still a petty tyrant, a stooge of US/Israel and Saudi Arabia none the less who is in fact every bit of a tyrant as Mubarak--but with a pretty wife who knows what Twitter is, so Western liberals :loveya: Nour and her evil husband HRM.

9. The status quo between Israel and Egypt & Jordan looks reasonably peaceful to me
Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Iran not so much.

Why is that?
