Muslim Brotherhood Leader: Dissolve the Israel Peace Treaty
Eli Lake reports on an unhelpful statement:

A political leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood Thursday called on any government that replaces Hosni Mubarak's regime to withdraw from the 32-year-old peace treaty with Israel.

"After President Mubarak steps down and a provisional government is formed, there is a need to dissolve the peace treaty with Israel," Rashad al-Bayoumi, a deputy leader of the outlawed movement, said on Japan's NHTV.

The interview contrasted with earlier signals from the group. On Feb. 1, Mahmoud Ezzat, a spokesman for the brothers, told CBS News that his organization "will respect the peace treaty with Israel as long as Israel shows real progress on improving the lot of the Palestinians."

For what it's worth, al-Bayoumi's statement sounds to me like more of an empty campaign promise, rather than something a future Egyptian government would actually try to do. Of course, I could be naive on this point.

6. Actually, that's very scary to Israelis living only a few miles from the Egypt border.
Edited on Sat Feb-05-11 12:55 PM by shira
Not to mention what that means for Gaza, as Hamas will be able to import any weapon they want through the Sinai.

13. Being scared doesn't mean you have no opinions.
Frightened people have plenty of opinions, they are just not that well thought out.

10. last I read Hamas closed the border between Egypt and Gaza
and by the way how many 'enemy forces' are in the Sinai? How many Merkava's does Israel have lined up at the border right now?

12. Hamas closed it? When?
There are no enemy forces in the Sinai now, nor Israeli tanks. The issue is what will be when the very pro-Hamas MB gains more influence in Egypt.

14. Hamas closes Gaza's southern border
Hamas officials today closed Gaza's southern border as Israel warned that the turmoil in Egypt could result in increased smuggling of weapons into the volatile territory.

Gaza-Egypt border closes as uprising continues

Gaza's Hamas rulers closed the Rafah border crossing, on Sunday 30th January, after guards on the Egyptian side fled their posts amid the spiralling unrest gripping the country.

As the angry revolt against President Hosni Mubarak entered its sixth day, Hamas officials announced the Rafah crossing would be closed for ' several days' , preventing hundreds of Palestinians from crossing into Egypt, according to AFP .

15. Egyptian government forces near the border have been under attack for days
It has been only somewhat and quietly reported, but al-Arish and nearby areas (not directly on the border, but fairly close) was the scene of some of the strongest fighting between regime & resistance forces, with several gov't buildings torched after the forces of the dictator were routed and fled. Hamas may or may not support what's going on, but sure as hell don't want to get involved in any fighting--they're too scared of the zionist enemy using the opportunity to unleash more violence on Gaza under the cover of the chaos in Egypt.

5. Wouldn't that start some kind of arms race in the Sinai?
On google earth,Israels border with Egypt looks like an invisible line in the sand. I don't think that that would last if Egypt erases the peace treaty.

19. Not exactly.
The Egyptians wouldn't move their army into the Sinai because that would lead to almost immediate war. That is essentially what happened in 1967. The Israelis aren't going to stand by and let the Egyptians move large forces up to the border. So the Egyptians will keep their army east of the Suez Canal until they are ready to start something (which wouldn't happen until they get the rest of the Arab/Muslim world on board). Which is what the Israelis are so concerned about. They don't fear that this revolution will lead to an immediate war. They see this as the next step to war down the line in five or ten years or so.
