Israel, Build the Temple Now!
Personal Note: This is just a little oped from the most powerful base of support for Ariel Sharon's government in the US.

Israel, Build the Temple Now!

Ariel Natan Pasko, November 28, 2003

The State of Israel - the Jewish state - should start rebuilding the Beit HaMikdash - the Temple destroyed by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago - right now. There it's been said!

Now that we've broken through the psychological barrier, we can begin to discuss openly and calmly, what until now was forbidden to say, or even think...

Maybe it's the excitement of Hanukah coming up. Remember, the holiday that celebrates the victory of light over darkness and the few over the many? Hanukah, where the Jews recaptured their homeland from the Greek imperialists, liberated Jerusalem and the Holy Temple, and reinstated the service there.

Maybe it's over exuberance from the recent holiday period just past; reading regularly in my prayer book about the "Avodah" in days of yore, i.e. service in the Holy Temple, including sacrifices, burning incense, singing and Levite bands playing harps, flutes, cymbals, trumpets and countless other musical instruments. Maybe it's the descriptions of weeklong "holy" parties, including juggling with fiery torches, dancing and musical processions.

7. A little difficult
seeing as how the workforce that Solomon used was not exactly willing to show up then, and are even less likely to show up now.

3. Questions that come to mind:
The State of Israel - the Jewish state - should start rebuilding the Beit HaMikdash

Some questions:

1) Can the government of Israel build, or prevent someone from building, the Beit HaMikdash?

2) Wouldn't it behoove state of Israel to make peace first before building the BH? (Beit HaMikdash...I can't spell it.)

3) Exactly what would the problem be if they built it? Who would object?

4. Well, I'm not an expert, but I think the major problem with building it is
that the site of the original temple is not on their land.

are on the site of the temple. These are the third holiest sites in Islam.

See the problem?

9. Well couldn't they build it next door?
I know I'm being naive here. What I mean is, is there anything in the Pentateuch that says the BH must be built on precisely the same spot? What's wrong with moving it over a few hundred meters?

12. If you take a look
at the specs of that building, you will just have to sit down and mop your brow.
The number one problem is NOT the Muslims, or even the presence of the Al Aqsa mosque on that same spot.

G-d has some VERY definite specs and it is, for all intenets and purposes, practically impossible to build - or rebuild that temple if you give a hoot about G-d's instructions.

Some people will try you convince you that it is otherwise, but let me assure you that Moshe Dayan did not surrender that parcel of land because of anything other than the knowledge that Israel stood to be destroyed by G-d if they went ahead and built something contrary to G-d's specs on that site. Dayan figured he might as well let the Muslims who worship on that site site catch any lightening rods that might happen to land there. Most rabbis agree with this stance.

Go take a look at the specs.

6. More Questions:
1) What branch of Judaism would have control of the BH?

2) In the Catholic faith, the Bishop of Rome is the Pope. Will whoever the Rabbi of the BH be the Jewish Pope? (Apologies to Jewish DUers for the term "Jewish Pope"...I just don't know what else to call it.)

3) How can you have the BH without the Ark of the Covenant?

4) Will the Goys be invited to the party on opening day? I'll bet it will be one hell of a party!

13. A brief history of the Temple & Ark
I probably have lots of stuff wrong, but here's the story I learned in Sunday school as I remember it:

The Ark used to be stored in a tent.

King David thought to himself: "Dude! Why should I be in a palace while the Ark is in some smelly camel-skin tent?" (Or words to that effect.)

David was all gung-ho about building a temple, but God stopped him and said that David's son, Solomon, would be the one to build the temple. Solomon built the Temple and the Ark stayed there for a few hundred years.

Eventually the Babylonians conquered Israel and destroyed Solomon's temple. They took the Ark as booty and forced the Jews into exile to the land of Ur. (450 BC??)

After the exile the Jews came back to Israel and re-built the Temple and put the Ark back. All was kosher until the Zealot rebellion against Roman authority. The Romans came down & opened a can of whup-ass on the Jews and destroyed the Temple. (50 AD???)

There are rumors that the Temple priests were able to salvage the Ark, and they hid it realllllllly well.

There are many legends about the Ark. (Indiana Jones aside.) I was raised in a devout Catholic family. My Mom told me as a child that if the Ark was ever found, that would be one of the signs that Jesus was about to return.

15. Another spin for the same story
It was man that wanted to build Temples, it was God who wanted to dwell among His people without the need for Temples.

A historical footnote:

The priesthood had become corrupt and wealthy while the people toiled under the tyranny of the kings (another of man's ideas, having kings), and later under the tyranny of Rome.

The rebellion against Rome in 70 CE was also a rebellion against the corrupt collaborationist Jewish priesthood and royals.
