Editor's Notes: Saul Singer, co-author of the Israel-redefining ‘Start-Up Nation,’ urges Israel and its supporters to internalize just how profoundly our phenomenal capacity for innovation can better this planet.

<snip>

Along with his New York-based co-author Dan Senor, Jerusalemite Singer set out to answer the question of how our tiny country, all but bereft of natural resources and in the midst of a constant struggle for physical survival, has nonetheless managed to outstrip every other nation on Earth in terms of hi-tech innovation. The two answered that question with such conviction and flair as to turn their book into a bestseller, with over 100,000 copies in print in its English-language edition and numerous foreign language translations emerging worldwide. So compelling was their diagnosis, moreover, that the book is gradually transforming perceptions of Israel – at least in parts of the global technology world. Start-Up Nation, Singer reports, is being read in some economies as a kind of “how to” manual – as in, how to orient your economy to maximize its talent for innovation, with the Israel experience held up as an exemplar.

But as their book makes plain, and as Singer elaborated in an interview this week, replicating the Israeli model is not so simple. There are, we hardly need reminding, unique characteristics to this country. And aspects of its geo-strategic reality, of its ability to absorb immigrants, of its need to place immense responsibility on young shoulders in the army, are central to its capacity to thrive so strikingly in the field of innovation.

That capacity for innovation, says Singer, has gradually transformed the Israeli economy over the past three decades, but it has the potential to achieve a great deal more. It is already enabling us to genuinely serve as a “light unto the nations,” Singer argues – saving lives, bettering the world. Tikkun olam in practice.

Among the examples Singer cites here are Shai Agassi’s trailblazing Better Place electric car venture, and the dramatic new approach to teaching being pioneered by Time To Know, revolutionizing the classroom. (It has been widely reported, to give one more telling instance, that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’s life was saved after she was shot in Arizona in January because the emergency medical team applied a revolutionary elasticized bandage, developed in Israel, that creates pressure to quickly staunch head wounds.)

2. It truly is amazing.
''Truly amazing. Israel has the largest number of start-ups per year outside the US of any country. Not per capita. The largest number. Period. We have about 500 a year, and all of Europe has 600-700. Our 7.5 million people compared to that whole continent’s 700 million people.''

6. Progressives Should Support Israel
The progressive movement has been tarred by a vocal minority that seeks to criticize Israel at every opportunity. It's time for the progressive community to stand up and show its support for Israel.

Israel is a progressive's dream: "Universal education, universal health care, equal rights, minority rights protections, strong activist courts, and gays and lesbians openly serving in the military." As progressives, we should be outraged by the way the Arabs, including the Palestinians, treat women, gays and other minorities. We should be outraged that the Palestinians demand that no Jews should be allowed to live in the West Bank, even as over one million Palestinians live within pre-1967 Israel. We should be outraged by the beheadings and honor killings. Israel is not perfect, but Israel holds itself to its own standards, to progressive standards.

Israel is accused by some of apartheid. Yet Arab Israelis "can be found on the Supreme Court, in the Knesset (parliament), in ambassadorial positions, as senior officers in the police and army, as mayors, as deputy-speakers of the Knesset and even as government ministers and deputy ministers. Prominent Arab Israelis can be found in almost every sphere of Israeli life, including in the medical fields, media and playing on Israel's national soccer team." Whatever an apartheid state is, it's not Israel.

That's all well and good, but what about the "occupation"? What about ending the conflict between Israel and its neighbors? Progressives are on the side of peace. So is Israel. There would be no "occupation" if Jordan had not attacked Israel in 1967, and there would be no "occupation" if Palestinian leadership had accepted either of Israel's offers in the last decade to withdraw from nearly all of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).

7. Only someone laughably blinkered would think Israel is a light unto the nations.
"The nations" desperately need to provide a light unto Israel, by boycotting and sanctioning it until it reforms.

16. Israel AND 'the nations' need to provide a light unto themselves first!
Edited on Sat Apr-02-11 10:22 AM by LeftishBrit
Countries that started an illegal war in Iraq that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, and continue an occupation there/ treat their own racial and religious minorities as scapegoats/ reward super-rich and irresponsible bankers while drastically cutting services to poor people/ undermine vital public services or never establish them in the first place/ etc. need to reform themselves before they have much right to boycott a similarly (not more or less) delinquent country - and that is just about democratic nations!

As for Israel itself, it does need to reform itself - or, even if it survives, it may cease to be a real democracy. 60% of young people consider strong leadership as more important than democracy = a big threat to the democratic state. They need to provide a light unto their own new generations, before they can provide a light unto anyone else.

What would be good, is for the nations to support and facilitate the establishment of an independent Palestinian state - but it's not just Israel that's been undermining that; it's Hamas too!!

14. I thought the same at first, but it's a different person
This David Horovitz is the editor of the Jerusalem Post; and so far as I know, unrelated to the American RW pundit.
