Poll: One-third of Palestinians support Itamar massacre

One-third of Palestinians surveyed said they supported an attack last month in which five members of an Israeli family stabbed to death in their home in a West Bank settlement, according to a team of Israeli and Palestinian pollsters.

Earlier last month, a murderer entered the Fogel family's home in the West Bank settlement of Itamar, killing father and mother Udi Fogel, 37, and Ruth Fogel, 36, and three of their children, Yoav Fogel, 10, four-year-old Elad Fogel, and three-month-old Hadas Fogel.

According to police, the suspect broke into the house armed with a knife and stabbed parents Udi and Ruth, along with the three children. Magen David Adom rescue services arrived at the scene and found them all dead.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack, calling it despicable, immoral and inhuman.

So one could say that the Palestinians oppose the attack and think it was wrong, most of them? In an election, that would be a landslide.

That's awful.

What would you think about 1/3 of Americans being in favor of doing that to a certain people? You'd be damned glad 2/3 aren't for it?

6. Well, here's an article from a few years ago where the author is indeed damned glad that 2/3 of

Americans don't support torture under any circumstances (though about a third thought it was sometimes OK).

While one can assume that some of the torture-supporters would have made an exception for children, it still shows that sometimes one has to be glad that a majority support humanitarian values.

3. 100 women detained in Awarta

Hundreds of troops entered Awarta - the village adjacent to Itamar, and illegal settlement where the murders took place - shortly after midnight and imposed a curfew after which they began rounding up the women, local council head Tayis Awwad said.

In the wake of the murders, Awarta has been the centre of a massive manhunt. The village was put under military closure, and a curfew was imposed for five days between 12 and 16 March. Some 40 men were detained during the closure, and since then two more mass round ups were reported by local officials.

Those detained have been questioned and subject to DNA testing, officials said last week.

So far no one has been charged, with the military refusing to comment on the operation.

7. Horrible.

But a significant minority of any population are, to put it bluntly, right-wing poisonous snakes, prepared to support, if usually not to perpetrate, brutal atrocities toward others.

The baleful influences of sections of the Palestinian media no doubt increase the percentage above the baseline for such attitudes - I would estimate that tolerance for such actions toward members of an 'enemy' population would be more like one-sixth than one-third if not for the media incitement.

It is most depressing that people have such a capacity for hate that they don't see even the children of their 'enemies' as human.
