Why haven't the Palestinians declared Palestine as a state? I've been wondering about this and figure there's probably some pretty complicated answers to that question that I haven't seen yet. The only thing I could come up with is that Israel occupying the territory probably muddies things a bit and makes declaring statehood not such a simple thing as I might have thought. Any takers on this?
p.s. To the alert-trigger-happy among us, I've gotten the okay to post this question in a new thread, okay?

No clue.
It was noticeable that the "road map", which put a real state on offer, got a somewhat postive response.

I would guess that if they declared a state, Israel would destroy it-and they understand that fact. The only legal basis they have for a state is the 1947 UN resolution, and they know that if they declare their state according to that one, they will be disaregarded as hopeless idealists and their state will be destroyed. They only can declare a state within diplomatic negotiations in order for it to be viewed as legitimate by the governments of the world.
