Israeli forces fired shells and a missile at Palestinian demonstrators yesterday, killing 10 people and wounding at least 50, many of them children.

Despite widespread international condemnation, Shaul Mofaz, the Israeli defence minister, said the army would continue its search and destroy operation in the Gaza Strip. The attack took place in Rafah, where troops have been searching for militants.

President George W Bush demanded restraint from Israel without condemning the killings but his secretary of state, Colin Powell, said Israel's operations in Gaza were damaging peace efforts. "It is a tragic incident," he said.

Recent Israeli activities had "worsened the situation and made it more difficult for us to move forward and get back into the peace process".

of the settlers that were killed just two weeks ago, along with their pregnant mother. In close rang and in cold blood. Just compare the responses to that news item with this.

In Israel, the terror attacks are, unfortunately, in fact something we see quite often.
