Yosef Lapid, Holocaust Survivor, Compares Israeli Action to Nazis
An Israeli Cabinet minister on Sunday said the army's demolition of Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip reminded him of actions the Nazis took against his family during World War II and called for a halt to the policy of destroying homes.

The remarks by Justice Minister Yosef Lapid, a Holocaust survivor, sparked an uproar at the weekly Cabinet meeting, officials at the meeting said.

Lapid was quoted by officials at the meeting as saying a picture of an old Palestinian woman on the rubble of her home reminded him "of my grandmother in the Holocaust."

1. Lapin says he was misquoted
From Ha'aretz, which gives a more detailed report:

Justice Minister Yosef Lapid on Sunday harshly criticized Israel's demolition of Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip, saying it must end and warning that it could seriously damage Israel's standing in the world.

Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting, Lapid said Israel must halt the destruction. "The demolition of houses in Rafah must stop. It is not humane, not Jewish, and causes us grave damage in the world."

Specifying the potential damage in the international community, Lapid said: "At the end of the day, they'll kick us out of the United Nations, try those responsible in the international court in The Hague, and no one will want to speak with us."

Lapid sparked controversy when he said a picture of an elderly Palestinian woman searching on all fours for her medication reminded him of his grandmother.

Cabinet members immediately thought Lapid, a Holocaust survivor, was comparing the Israeli operation in Rafah to the Holocaust - but that was not his intention, Lapid told Israel Radio.

2. Who is Lapin
Certainly you are not confusing Yosef Lapid with the French ultra-right LaPen, or are you?

4. Oops, typo

On edit: Just did not get the typo. No, I did not think of LePen. Maybe because the name is close to french "lapin" = hare and the Ha'aretz link includes "hasen" which is German for hare?

5. The quotation
is not your own writing, I'm not sure you have read it if you misspell the name of the man the article is about.

6. I did read it! I even posted a thread on it simultaneously to this thread

Look for it, I asked for a delete. Then I cut/pasted the quotation from Ha'aretz into this thread and typed in the headline, obviously with a typo.

Added on edit: BTW, do you think it is worthwile to make up a fuss about a typo? It's more important to think about what Mr. Lapid was trying to tell. Personally, I do hope that more people like him stand up and speak out against the insanity and brutality that has taken a firm grip on Isreali politics.

10. Accepted
I accept your explanation and sorry for being a bit touchy about it. It sometimes is in the air. You got lot's of support, though.

I do respect Yosef (Tony)Lapid, however, the title is misleading and that is also a problem in that it draws incorrect assumptions.

I did want a clarification, as I didn't notice any personal statement attached.

Rhetorical question, you have never spelled something incorrectly or mis-stated something in Hebrew? Possibly to the amusement of your students? (You said publicly once you were a teacher and that you emigrated/made aliyah to Israel).

For some people here, English is NOT their first or possibly even their second language.

As for myself, a native speaker of English, many of my posts suffer grammatically from the lack of time I can spend with them coupled with the use of the text box editor, which for me, does not engender good writing.
