Freed journalist: 'Israel should be ashamed'
Freed journalist: 'Israel should be ashamed'
27/05/2004 - 19:02:05

British journalist Peter Hounam was released from Israeli custody tonight after a day in custody on suspicions linked to freed nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu.

As he left the Jerusalem jail where he had been quizzed by secret service agents, Hounam said Israel should be ashamed for arresting him.

He complained of being confined in a “dungeon with excrement on the walls” and limited to “two hours of sleep.”

His lawyer said he was questioned for eight hours by Israeli security.

3. They should be ashamed but they won't be. They are proud of it.
The world should be ashamed to let Israel and the US get away with what they are doing...but these are the two rogue nations with WMDs and one has already used nuclear weapons on civilians twice! Said it was done to end WWII which was already over before the bombs were dropped. I was ashamed of Harry Truman for doing this but I believe he was encouraged to do this by the neocons of his day.

4. There is an old Twilight Zone episode where a family must don horrific
masks. The father has made this a requirement if this wish to claim an inheritance. However when they remove the masks their faces resemble their respective masks.

I think of this when I think of Israel. To claim their "promised Land" they have adopted horrific policies and their character has been changed.

A people that once were beacons of morality fighting endlessly for the underdog have lost their way. Their willingness to resort to any means to justify their ends have altered their soul. This new example is just another brick in the wall.

<snip>

"British journalist Peter Hounam, who exposed the revelations of nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu in 1986, protested that he was "not a spy" after being released by Israeli police."

<snip>

"Senior Israeli security officials said late Thursday in Tel Aviv that Hounam would be expelled from the Jewish state "with his consent" and return to London on Friday, and that he would be barred from ever returning to the country."

<snip>

"The leader of the House of Commons Peter Hain told the British parliament earlier Thursday that the government in London was "very concerned" about the arrest and had sought more information from Israel."

<snip>

"An opposition Labor member of the Israeli parliament, Yuli Tamir, condemned Hounam's detention, saying: "This arrest is dangerous for democracy."

7. Briton says he was held in Israeli dungeon - MG
A British journalist released from Israeli custody on Thursday said that he had been held in a dungeon with excrement on the walls following his arrest on suspicion of espionage.

Peter Hounam was detained on Wednesday by the Israeli security agency on suspicion that he had obtained classified information from Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli technician who was jailed after revealing Israel's nuclear capabilities to the world.

The journalist was released on condition that he leave Israel within 24 hours, and will not be allowed to return .
