The United States today baulked at a ruling by the world court declaring Israel's controversial West Bank barrier illegal, while the long-awaited verdict met with a measured response in Europe.
The White House, Israel's chief supporter, said it was "inappropriate" for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue the ruling, a sentiment echoed by Democrat John Kerry, who is challenging President George W Bush in the US presidential election in November.
"We do not believe that that's the appropriate forum to resolve what is a political issue," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters.
Kerry said: "Israel's fence is a legitimate response to terror that only exists in response to the wave of terror attacks against Israel... It is not a matter for the ICJ".

These know-nothing upstarts have the gall to think they can say what is and isn't legitimate according to international law when John Kerry says that it's legitimate?
