UN blasts Arafat, says Palestinian Authority near collapse
The United Nations (news - web sites) said that the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites) was in danger of collapse, blasting Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) in a hard-hitting statement that drew Palestinian anger and Israeli praise.

The UN's Middle East envoy, Terje Roed-Larsen, told the Security Council there was a "steadily emerging chaos" in Palestinian areas and that Arafat had shown a "lack of political will" to reform his Authority government.

"The paralysis of the Palestinian Authority has become abundantly clear, and the deterioration of law and order in Palestinian areas is steadily worsening," Roed-Larsen said in the monthly council briefing on the situation.

"This collapse of authority cannot be attributed only to the Israeli incursions and operations inside Palestinian towns. The Palestinian Authority is in deep distress and is in real danger of collapse," he said.

He said Arafat had given "only nominal and partial support" to Egyptian efforts to reform Palestinian security services, called for under the internationally backed "road map" for Middle East peace.

1. Where Have We Heard This One Before?
There is chaos where Arafat is around. Lessee, Jordan? Check. Beirut? Check. Tripoli? Check. West Bank/Gaza? Check.

Hey, at least he's consistant.

I know I'm not being progressive for saying this, but maybe, just maybe if the PA had assumed some semblance of a nation building civic government rather than a corrupt thugocracy umbrella of terrorist organizations the Palestinian people would have been a little better off.

But then, I'm not as progressive as some people who simply blame Israel for everything.

3. Blaming...
...someone else is easy. Accepting responsibility and being accountable for your own actions is hard. Several supporters of the Palestinians on this forum choose to take the easy route and blame Israel for every trouble. Looking at the PA and seeing it for what it really is and what it really did the very people it was entrusted to lead is hard.

5. I do seem to remember that Mr. Roed-Larsen is an anti-semite.
Perhaps he has recently seen the light.
