Israel Plans for Event of Arafat's Death

Israel is worried about chaos that might follow the death of Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) and will do everything possible to prevent the Palestinian leader from being buried in Jerusalem, according to a contingency plan obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.

The five-page document, prepared by the Foreign Ministry, lays out a series of forecasts about what might follow Arafat's death: the collapse of the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites), a challenge by Islamic militants, and upheaval in other parts of the Middle East.

-snip-

The plan includes recommendations on how to contain what Israel expects to be an extremely volatile environment. The stickiest issue, it says, will be where to bury Arafat.

-snip-

Israel must take extreme measures to prevent this scenario, including preparations for a "wide-ranging military operation" in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites), according to the document.

Palestinians around the world will express collective grief, the document says. It predicts a "heroic and sacrificial story" about his demise and says Israel will be blamed.
-snip-

heck no, everybody will blame Newfoundland

jeez, they even want to control his dead body.

2. Sharon should be right next to him

For Sharon is responsible for far more innocent deaths.

4. Sharon is a sweet old man doing the best he can to protect his countrymen
He's doing a great job. He's a hero as far as I'm concerned.

6. Whoa
Now that is a hell of a statement.

Sometimes the things people say on this portion of DU amaze the heck out of me.

I think disrespect for the dead, no matter how you feel about them, is wrong...but that is just my opinion.

7. He's a tyrant as far as I'm concerned.
If there were any Middle Eastern war criminal that the United States SHOULD have removed from power, it was Ariel Sharon. I'm sure the 2,651 that he's killed, including 523 children, and the countless that have been injured, impoverished, and/or made homeless by his hand would heartily agree with me.

8. Your entitled to your opinion.
I respect your right to say it. I totally disagree with it. But you know that and I know you know that.

13. arafat=killer
how about the thousands that arafat has had killed, deliberately. civilians, athletes at the olympics, etc

how about the millions and millions of dollars that arafat stole from his own people. if that money went where it was supposed to, deaths could have been avoided.

one may argue sharon has innocent blood on his hands, but there is far far more blood on arafats. he is directly responsible for all the civilians killed by the al asqa murder brigade, his personal terror group. and the PLO before that

17. Actually
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 12:42 AM by sirjwtheblack
Only 614 Israelis have died over the same time period as the Palestinians I quoted.

On edit: Oh yeah, and that's only if you're naive enough to believe Arafat has much control over the terrorist activity. They may look up to him, but they don't take orders from him. No doubt, Arafat did some things in his day, but so has Ariel. You forget the slaughters he's directed in the past leading the IOF (Israeli Occupation Forces).

Nice try, but you're 100% completely and totally wrong. :hi:

Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 04:17 PM by wuushew
Do you honesty believe that he is the best that the Israeli political system can put forth? Ignoring his character or actions before becoming Prime Minister still leaves his support of illegal settlements which is short sighted, panders to the religiously insane and does not enhance the security of Israel proper in the least. For all this he is above criticism?

An appreciable admixture of sarcasm in your No. 4 above, it will be a tremendous disappointment to me....

15. Could it be a manifestation of 'unconditional support'?
I've noticed the poster is big on unconditional support for Israel. The way I understand unconditional support is that someone who expresses it must NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES show anything but the most unwavering support for the person or thing they're showing unconditional support of. Kind of like those in the US who show their unconditional support of the US by labelling anyone who expresses the slightest whiff of criticism of Bush as being un-American etc....

I dunno, but I think sarcasm should be left in the hands of those who have mastered the art, like bemildred, or if it must be used, it should be accompanied by little warning tags...

3. Why? We buried Raygun and Nixon in comfortable graves
and I am sure that the Vietnamese,Cambodians and El Salvadorans among others don't take much comfort in this.

Spiting a dead man accomplishes nothing.

5. That we burried reagan below ground is our sin.
He was a disgrace as a president. Nixon repented, I'll give him that.
