Chirac ends row over Sharon's call for Jews to flee France

French President Jacques Chirac sent a message to his Israeli counterpart Moshe Katsav in which he says he views the crisis over Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's call for French Jews to immigrate to Israel because of "wild anti-Semitism" as over, Israel Radio reported Saturday.

The message was handed to Katsav by a French cabinet minister, the radio said.

"We see the spread of the wildest anti-Semitism there," Sharon said, adding that French Jews should make the move as soon as possible. "I think it's a must and they have to move immediately."

Even though Sharon also praised the French government's efforts to combat anti-Semitism, the French were outraged.

Secondly, what hasn't been said is that unlike the very public utterance of Sharon, the comment of this French diplomat was a private one made at a dinner party and picked up and repeated by Conrad Black's wife, who seems to be a rather vile right-wing shrew from all I've read about her....

...An Israeli diplomat who in his official capacity (and not speaking privately and being overheard by Conrad Black's moron wife) took it upon himself to act in a most unprofessional way and vandalise a work of art. Unfortunately when it comes to sacking diplomats, it doesn't really matter if one deserves to go if the country he represents actually condones their lack of professionalism...

Encouraging immigration is something quite a few states do. What they don't do is make seriously ridiculous statements attacking the country they're trying to get people to emigrate from...
